Can prostate cancer ever go into remission?

Posted by olman @olman, Jul 25 5:01pm

I asked several doctors if prostate cancer ever goes into remission.
All said NO
Has anyone heard otherwise?

Watching my Dad with his prostate cancer for 22 years I had somewhat rough idea of what I wanted to do and what I didn’t want to do. That said prostate cancer in my humble opinion seems to be one of the most difficult to understand
Even with all of the new breakthroughs options differ so much it makes it difficult for me to know what to do. At this point based on some basic changes that have occurred I’m still not sure where to go who to listen to and what to actually do.
For now I rather hear it all rather than stick my head in the sand.
So please continue with your stories of your own cancer as well as the stories about someone else’s experience

Has anyone else come up with the deduction that CRISPR will be the final answer once the figure out what needs to be altered?

Hi, again, @olman. It must have been tough watching your dad.

I still feel like we're missing information. Do you know your PSA? Your Gleason score? Whether imaging shows cancer spread outside the prostate? What procedures (if any) have you had?

If we have more info, we can share more relevant experiences and info of our own.

Thanks Jeff I have talked about Gleason score since mine was done in 2017 and what I recall was 2 numbers and was told if the users wee reversed it would suggest no cancer
Stages have never been mentioned. All digtal exames seemed it indicate “ GOOD “ but what did that mean? “ soft, not very large, a few “ nodules “ the digital made me wonder why all the concern. My biopsy in 2017 at UNC with a room full of students watching. The doc said you have been “ SO STILL “ we had to ask if you were still alive! ( laughter ) we would like to take a few more specimens since your so still and not complaining so I agreed. Instead of 12 specimens they took 18 out of a cancer that “ is the size of a dime “ It was an MRI GUIDED BIOPSY SO the saw exactly where the samples were coming from. I was disheartened when the Gleason score indicated cancer and as mentioned the numbers were like 4/3 but if it was 3/4 it would mean no cancer.
I was further disappointed when the doctor who was a leader in immunology told e that I’d only qualify for it after all else failed. So they suggested watching. My PSA was never more than 10 and was mostly around 5. In 2024 after a lot of sex they did a surprise test and my PSA was 40 or 50 I turned down what the docs suggested it keep creeping up as my sexual interaction were getting more frequent until t it 112 that when they did the Pet/Cat scan which showed it was in my seminal glands but nowhere else my digital exam was still good.

I’d like to get the pet scan image and post it here if I can mostly because the interpretation is radically different making me think two oncologist are looking at a different patients scan.
I hope that makes sense.
Thank as always!

Did they say it was in your seminal Vesicles? That would make it more aggressive.

Actually, the Gleason score that means no cancer is 3+3

3+4 is cancerous. The lowest level, grade group 2

4+3 is aggressive cancer grade group 3

Maybe I answered below.
My PSA AFTER the Pet/Cat scan they haven’t mentioned my Gleason score since 2017 I know the Duke oncologists nurse maybe se can tell me in a text. I go over the history of my PSA In the reply to Jeff below I’ve had more MRI’s than anything. The last one was with the latest T3 MRI and it seems that e size of the prostate hasn’t change much nor has the dime size cancer and until m PSA HIT 112 I could drive for hours without needing a bathroom
I’m taking Lupron in one month doses also taking that steroid the common one that they give everybody and that other medication that I never remember the name of Looking for a bottle Abiraterone. Ever since I’ve started these new meds I’m feeling really good peeing with no intermittent stop and starting and the stream is like high school if I slept better maybe I wouldn’t need to get to pee. Once I wake up I simply get out of bed to pee even though it’s not urgent.

Not sure if there’s anything lose I could ell you.
Let me know

Thanks for your interest!

I’m a little puzzled by your explanation of what’s going on.

If a biopsy shows, you have a Gleason 4+3 I can’t understand why they would put you on active surveillance (you say waiting). Aren’t they planning on doing something soon?

Have They found the cancer spread to the Seminal vesicles? You appear to be saying that. That makes the cancer more aggressive so you don’t want to wait around.

I don’t know if anybody here is capable of analyzing a PSMA Pet scan.

Have they talked to you about surgery versus radiation?

I would agree with Jeff. While we can share our own experiences and offer some general suggestions, no one here is qualified to read and interpret scans. If you have access to your medical chart online (e.g. via Epic's MyChart or a similar service), then there will also be a text write-up containing the radiologist's interpretation of the scan. That would be the best thing to look at.

Remission? I'm a stage 4 guy, 4.7 years in. Good question. After I saw this post the other day I asked my oncologist about my possible remission. She's a brilliant, wonderful, award winning an oncologist for her reach, teaching, and patient care. I am trusting her with my life. We had a really good conversation about my remission. Her response. "I am (meaning me) beyond it. My/your cancer is too far along. The best I/we can do is maximize the quality of life. Learn how to enjoy my life more. Many men place too much worry/concern based on there PSA, which I do. " So, what I've done is individualized the meaning of remission. For me remission means doing the best I can to help myself, my family/friends and other advanced prostate survivors learn how to live with and deal with this disease. It's become my calling. I volunteer at multiple cancer research centers, and my local hospital. I attend prostate cancer research events and serve on a NCI (national Cancer Institute) prostate cancer research panel. "Hope is a very good thing, in my mind hope and being hopeful is my remission."

I’m not sure if these replies are to my question about remission yesterday. I like reading about other people’s experiences it does however seem to me that there are so many conflicting answers that I’m not sure which one(s) to believe in!?
I lived with a family who had one of the strangest sequence of event with NHL non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
A stroke led to a 9 month coma She just awoke one day a mostly different person. Before the coma she was told she had 6 months to a year to live. After the coma she didn’t know that she had cancer. It was decided to stop all cancer treatments. Her cancer seemed to disappear! She lived for 8 years dying from an accident. It puzzled all of her doctors including the docs at Sloan Kettering.
I always thought the not worrying about dying and her cancer played a part in the remission or disappearance of the cancer. Moreover I know that STRESS makes cancer worse and worry is a form of stress. Diet also plays a part. And this strange thing happened to me while waiting to go into the MRI: a pretty nurse walked by and leaned over to whisper to me and she said: “ a little unsolicited information then said:
“ cancer loves beer and ice cream too” Truth was that I was eating a half of a half gallon of ice cream a night and drinking beer everyday! I cold turkied from both of them and my then PSA if 15 went to a 5 in a month.
I was doing great until I ment back to consuming red meat, alcohol, and ice cream. I gained about 40 lbs and was having lots of sex when my next PSA was taken it rose to 40.
The amount of waste in my digestive system absolutely affects my urination I can tell when I need to EVACUATE! It always helps.
I’m considering going to a health retreat for three weeks. Will keep you posted

Looking at this picture I must admit I’m not sure that I understand.
Reminds me of “ modern art” which leaves the viewer open to their own interpretations
I need a walk thru with explanations if that’s even possible here?

Not sure if I explained why I’m asking here about reading an image.
It boils down to the doctor telling me that “ there’s not much difference between your latest scan and the one taken three months ago which was the one my urologist said showed that the cancer had not spread BUT THE MYSTERY IS WHY HASNT IT SPREAD WITH A PSA OF 100 for as long as it’s been that high”
Now the oncologist said “ not much different than your first scan except for a few undefined “ shadowy areas “ that we can zap with pin point radiation “
Then the new oncologist said I’m no longer a candidate for radiation unless I have pain in “ those areas “ I have no idea what “ areas “ he’s talking about? Are those the areas with shadows?
What do shadows mean? Why no longer A candidate?
Can you see why my replies may seem vague?
Does Gleason score translate to “ stages “ not one doctor ever mentioned a stage.
I’m grasping for answers based on what I do know which seems to be NOT MUCH!

Have I confused you all even more now?
Thanks for trying to help
