Stem Cell Therapy for Arthritic Knees
I am a 77 year old woman with arthritic knees where it's difficult for me to walk and I'm trying to avoid knee replacement. I have done the Synvisc injections and physical therapy-- to no avail. Is there anyone here who has had stem cell therapy for arthritic knees and I would like to know your outcome. I know there are two, one where bone marrow is removed and the other where they take fat from the abdomen and regenerate and inject into the knees. I would like to know the cost and how long the procedure takes and any other information which would be helpful to me. I live in North Jersey and am currently looking for clinics in my area who perform this procedure. I appreciate your help.

i have found that PRP does the best for arthritis. I did have stem cells but PRP has worked well. I do it yearly. AS you age the Drs give you stronger doses of PRP. I do see dermatology offices are using PRP to regrow hair for women. Not sure why they exclude men.
Three weeks ago had 60 cc of bone marrow withdrawn from left hip to hopefully heal my knees some and quite a bit of pain the first week. Three weeks later the pain level is way down but not gone. Working in chemical plant as equipment operator so I am sitting down most the day but sill walking 4000 plus steps a day and working 6 and 7 days a week. I am hoping in a week or two at most the pain goes away.
@bustedthumb66, I moved your question about persistent pain following bone marrow aspiration from your hip in preparation for stem cell treatment for your knee to this related discussion in the Bones, Joints & Muscles support group.

I did this so you can connect with others who have had this procedure. When will you have the procedure to your knee? Did you contact your doctor to ask about the pain you're experiencing?
No haven’t talked to them. Read that working may prolong the healing time and was just wondering if others have had the same experience. Thursday was a very busy day and Thursday night had to take pain reliever to be able to fall asleep. Was supposed to go back last Saturday to see them for follow up shot of blood plasma but emergency at work and had to reschedule for next Saturday. I had the stem cell shots three weeks ago and I read that the soonest any relief might start is 6-8 weeks up to a year. Got fingers and toes crossed. QC kinetics.
I am also interested in that subject because I have recurring lower back issues, including inflammation of the nerve in the epidural space.
There is the Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and Stem Cell Therapy. Since everyone is different, which of them might have a more likely rate of success?
It has more to do with the quality of the stem cells than the different bodies of people. When I was having cervical surgery a couple years ago at Ucsd I was asking my doctors why I was having surgery and they weren’t using stem cells like some of the people I knew were paying for Instead of surgery. They told me that most of the things that are marketed direct to consumers are not the kind of things that will be helpful and those doctors and clinics are just taking people‘s money and they won’t have success in the long haul. The kind of success in the long haul comes from research hospitals where they’re using a certain kind of stem cell And quality. So I’d keep your money in your pocket and go to a good orthopedic surgeon and see also what they say. A good orthopedic surgeon does not want to cut you if there’s some other alternative I can promise you that.
I am trying "Softwave Technology" ultrasound stimulation for Arthritis in the Knee joint it is supposed to be regenerative, the first treatment certainly reduced the pain and made walking easier.
Does any body else have any experience with this?
Interesting, How long did the Softwave Technology ultrasound therapy take and is it a one time stimulation or part of a series to gain maximum success?
I had stem cells from my hip injected into my SI joint. After about 5 weeks I started have an increase in pain in that joint that just worsened over the weeks that followed. Finally I was hospitalized to get my severe pain under control. That was at the end of December of last year. I was on pain medication, got a steroid injection and decadron to calm thevinflammation down. I would never do it again. But that’s just me.
Hi Maria,
I'm sorry for the pain you had to go through. I hope you are better now. I had not heard of decadron before.
People seem to have very mixed results, usually bad, with stem cell or platelet rich plasma injections.
I don't know a lot about the SI joint. Is fusion a possibility (although I would only do it as a last resort)? 15 years ago it was recommended I have my S1/L5/L4 fused. I opted for laminotomies instead, so no metal in my back. I'm still doing fine. Always get a second opinion.
My best to you.
Joe
