Xifaxan for SIBO
A number of you have indicated success with SIBO using drug Xifaxan. Talked with my doctor yesterday and he said he didn't see how this would help. Said for IBS and travelers diarrhea. He reluctantly prescribed 600 mg per day for 10 days. Feedback appreciated. Thanks

I completed the Dysbiocide and FC-Cidal with my Functional Medicine doctor a year ago. It didn't work for me. I was not told to avoid anything like sweets however.
Sweets and gluten feed sibo. I tried these herbals once and returned, but the second time made it disappear. Please cut wheat, gluten and also any food that is sweet and you should do it all the time. You can eat something sweet every now and then. I bet you will see the results. I would not even eat juice, watermelon and fruits that are sweet till get better. Then you can have them sometimes.
jojo - Thank you for your quick response. I was tested for gluten and I do not have celiac or a gluten intolerance. I can give it a try. Gluten free bread is awful and grainy (yuck) and I always have a sandwich for lunch. I don't know how to make a sandwich any other way. I was hoping the Xifaxan and Neomycin combo would do the trick. I'm only on day 4 out of 14 days on that.
I came across success stories using celery juice. Anyone else? My 7 yo daughter has hydrogen SIBO (2nd time). The first time, she did low FODMAP diet, a round of flagyl (didn’t help), then a round of rifaximin (helped a good bit). 6 months later, we’re here again and the rifaximin is on backorder. Think we’re going to try the celery juice… will report back.
Hello. I hate to say this, but I have done the SIBO dance abd absolutely nothing helps. I refuse to take antibiotics for something that cycles back anyhow. It's vicious cycle for sure!
Same with me. The antibiotic treatment cost me $2,000 and did nothing.
Flagyl is the absolute best - however if you have anatomical abnormalities, then SIBO will come back regardless. I had my ileocecal valve removed and cecum, so SIBO always returns for me. However, if you have normal anatomy Flagyl may be worth a go. Xifaxan has never really helped me but there are no safety risks associated. Flagyl can cause neuropathy in rare cases.
Trial and error can lead to finding acceptable gluten free bread, Udi English muffins are quite good, Veneziana corn pasta fooled even my Italian husband.
Worth keep trying, even if money wasted. No gluten, little sweets. has made enough of a difference to keep going without taking antibiotic.

After a few rounds of SIBO, in which Xifaxin helped get me out of a couple of episodes, I realized that improper diet was the problem, causing relapses. Try the diet by Dr. Mark Pimentel of Cedars Sinai hospital. Sugar and sweeterners are one culprit, as are beans. Not a hard diet to stay on.
