I'm in the UK and thankfully I had a doctor who has experience in PMR diagnosis. But initially she was pretty certain but would not prescribe anything until blood tests were done and analysed. So for me that was 3 days of suffering with it and then the diagnosis was confirmed... In fairness there does not appear to be a test that says... Yes you have PMR.. In theory this could be something else as the symptoms are related to various other health issues but in reality how the process starts and how it doesn't bother smaller joints I am led to believe all signs point to PMR. Also it appears that the medication is helping so that again makes me feel like I have the correct diagnosis.

Your experience was better than mine when I was diagnosed with PMR. My first rheumatologist was sure it was something else that wasn't treated with prednisone. I waited 6 months while I insisted that I needed prednisone. I didn't do my research because I didn't know anything about PMR until it was diagnosed. That was when prednisone was formally prescribed. Until then a sympathetic GP occasionally prescribed small amounts of prednisone to me.

I acquired other things that went wrong after taking prednisone for 12 years. I finally tapered off prednisone about 5 years ago. Everything has improved since then.

Very good news that your doctor felt confident to prescribe prednisone based on lab results. And it is helping you!
