Connection to Epstein Barr Virus or PN as autoimmune disease

Posted by wow111 @wow111, Jun 2 5:10am

I have read about Epstein Barr Virus and some symptoms seem similar to PN, ie pins and needles in feet or hands. Any info about PN being triggered by surgery or EBV? I had a successful shoulder replacement but was unfortunately left with "nerve damage" in my hand which seems to be morphing into PN. Primary doctors are pretty useless in the UK. Is it reasonable to request a blood test for EBV antibodies? This site is the only help I have been able to get and without it I would be even more distressed about my condition. Thank you for any information.

There is autoimmune neuropathy which is caused by an autoimmune diseases lupus,, Rheumatoid Arthritis,
MS , Parkinson’s, Sjogrens and so forth normally diagnosed by rheumatologist my EMG/ nerve conduction test said autoimmune axonal sensorimotor dysautonomia peripheral polyneuropathy, small fiber neuropathy and cardiac autonomic neuropathy ( it’s moved into my heart) plus my positive labs for all four autoimmune diseases along with inflammatory markers elevated. . I cried. I was expecting RA my mother, grandmother, nephew has juvenile Ra now an adult, aunt and sister all have RA. Where did the lupus come from? Sjogrens is not nice it causes brain lesions and a bunch of other problems. As an RN I was not prepared for my diagnosis. I was on IVIG from age 10-18 for autoimmune disorders. I had a research neurologist tell me if I would have remained on IVIG I wouldn’t be in the shape I am in today. My specialty was neuromuscular neurology.
I was diagnosed with Sjogrens Lupus Hashimotos and connective tissue disease. Bam all four at once. I was expecting two but got four.
Idopathic neuropathy- no cause
Diabetic Neuropathy
Below is from Dr Anne Oaklander a research neurologist who’s speciality is neuropathy.

Yes, the Epstein Barr Virus can definitely cause nerve damage. It is in the herpes virus family, though it is not the same as the herpes types 1&2 cold sores. Though EBV often manifests as mononucleosis, not always. I had a severe acute case of EBV with a negative mono test 39 years ago. It attacked my nervous system and I was bedridden for 3 years. I developed ME/CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) and have been disabled ever since.

The nerve damage it causes later also progressed to “Idiopathic” Axonal Sensor Motor Polyneuropathy- large fiber. Wheel chair is now needed to go out to places . My Neurologist explained to me how the EBV Virus triggered an autoimmune neuropathy . Not all EBV infections present with respiratory illness. Here’s some good info on the connection between EBV and nerve damage.
I also have Hashimoto’s in addition to ME/CFS.
