Does anyone have a solution to help manage Reclast side effects?

Posted by dingus @dingus, Aug 15, 2024

Does anyone have a solution to combat Reclast side effects. I had the infusion a year and a half ago and the side effects started shortly after I had the infusion. I still have weak legs, swelling in feet, pain in bones, dizziness (serious dizziness), cold sweats, tired all the time and nervous twitching in bones. Any suggestions?

Same here! I cannot take Advil and Tylenol does nothing. Gabapentin helps sometimes to sleep for a few hours. Going to see a Sports Medicine doctor as follow up. However, this has significantlly impacted my life.

I am a 68 year old male that retired a little over a year ago and just a month before retirement I received my first Reclast infusion and do not plan on ever getting another! I have had constant pain in both shoulders, left foot and nausea off and on to this day! I will always express, if I had my days to live over, I would not have this infusion. When I was a youth I was diagnosed with Rickets and malnutrition; this must be the culprit for the low bone density. I’m starting to have less and less confidence I physicians that just think it’s ok to push medication and not knowing 100% what some of the potential side effects can be! I do go to physical therapy biweekly and it seems to help a little; just staying as physical as I can!

@windyshores It has finally become clear to me that the dosages of the drugs available are not chosen based on what's good for the individual. Instead the dosages reflect economic interests and what "they" think will work best for all women with osteoporosis assuming that treatment will not be individualized and nuanced.
For instance, as long ago as 2002 they did a study showing you get almost identical results with Reclast dosages ranging from 0.25 mg to 4 mg with dosing schedules varied depending on the size of the dose. By dosing 0.25 mg at 3 months they accomplished the same bone benefits as 4 mg at one year. So a total of 1 mg in a year got the same result as 4 mg in one year. But what was desired by the various researchers and experts was it seems to improve compliance and convenience and reduce cost and produce the greatest good for all. Assuming of course that there is no health impact of using 4 times more of a drug than necessary to produce the same effect.
"Women received placebo or intravenous zoledronic
acid in doses of 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, or 1 mg at three month intervals. In addition, one group received a total annual dose of 4 mg as a single dose, and another
received two doses of 2 mg each, six months apart.
Lumbar-spine bone mineral density was the primary end point. There were similar increases in bone mineral density in all the zoledronic acid groups".

There is a paywall for the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) but you can create a free account and get 3 free reads a month. That's how I got this paper.
I there are one or two more papers related to this that I have to finish checking out.
Thanks Windy for all your input on this forum.

No! Reclast is the only one I have taken. My endocrinologist wanted to give me an injection of something different and says Reclast did not give me the symptoms that I am experiencing and set me up with a rheumatologist, 01/29/2026. I know, there is not any medication out there that doesn’t have some kind of side effect and I’m already dealing with issues, dot need more! I just have to keep moving and try to move past my current situation. FDIC should Not allow this drug to be given with out better preparation! I, myself have issues with large amounts of fluid due to a constant burning sensation when I void due to bladded cancer from taking Zantac for years which limited my consumption of water prior to the infusion. My endocrinologist should have assisted me with this rather than just wanting to do the infusion. It’s been over a year now….the pain is constant during the day and worse at night or if I try taking a relaxing break for a day or more. Them more I move, the less it hurts but nights are awful! People really need to better review their options before listening to their doctor who evidently don’t know that much about the potential side effect from the medication they seem to just want to push onto their patients. I do know, what effects me might not you but better studies might of prevented me from receiving something that is going to to do just as much harm if not more so because of my inability to better prepare myself for their medication.

I heard something really interesting the other day. I heard that there is a doctor in Australia that is looking at the amount of the dosage that is given of these infusions. He is doing that because he is wondering why the same amount of rec class is given to people with a larger and a smaller BMI and could this possibly be the reason there are so many more side effects in some people. I am going to try to look into this more as I am very much on the fence about taking this med because I am small Boned and it possibly could affect me more.

This is being done here in the states. Several people have posted on this site that they asked for and received a lower dosage because of their weight.
A frequent poster on here spoke about asking for a lower dose. Also, asking that the infusion be given more slowly. I requested that my Reclast infusion be given over a longer amount of time. I was accommodated.

How long did your infusion take? Mine, in November, took approximately 30 minutes, which included time to set up in my arm and flush at end.
