Knee nerve pain after total knee replacement

Posted by Richard @zman42, Jul 9 2:00pm

Hello:
I am 8 weeks out from a TKA and have nerve pain.
My research indicates that during this surgery, the nerves, including the saphenous nerve, are severed to allow the surgeon access to the knee joint.
This process can cause nerve damage and possibly a neuroma.
I have been told that the nerve pain will subside over time.
The research I have done indicates that if the nerves are indeed damaged, there should be timely intervention to prevent more complications.
I am very proactive with my health and feel that I need to be tested, including an ultrasound.
Would appreciate any feedback.
Thank you

Good afternoon Richard,
My wife's TKR occurred approximately four years ago. Your description of the nerve issues created by the surgery is entirely accurate. She now experiences near constant pain due to saphenous nerve damage and resulting neuroma.
Working in the medical field, she has been proactive in seeking relief.
The information from a half dozen orthopedics she has consulted largely advises to wait for improvement or pain medication which she generally avoids. Her condition has been exacerbated due to the time passed. The purpose of this comment is to emphasize that "time is of the essence", which you appear to recognize. This is key and you are very insightful.
My wife is now a patient at Mayo (FL) where there is research and therapies being conducted on this issue.
We wish you the best possible outcome.

Thank you for your reply
It confirms my research
So sorry your wife has experienced pain for so long
Check out Dr.Shi at Mayo FL
He has done a lot of studies on this type of nerve pain and developed a surgical fix for this problem.
Best wishes

Thank you, Vikki.
I am scheduled for a nerve block
If successful, possible outpatient surgery to ablate the Saphenous nerve
All at Mayo
Hoping for the best

The nerve block will be beneficial.
I had that to my right rotator cuff repair in 2019.
May I ask if you are scheduled to spend a night or two in the hospital post TKR? I say that, as I was in for two nights, as my surgeon wanted me to stay ahead of the pain.

Thank you, Richard
He is treating her at Mayo. A highly capable physician
who finds that a clear path is not evident due to the extent of surgical trauma. Following two unsuccessful nerve ablations at another facility, his initial effort has not produced the relief he had hoped for. We do continue and are fortunate to have access to care at Mayo.
Best wishes
Wayne

Hi:
I may not have been clear with my message....sorry
I had the TKR 8 weeks ago
The block is to eliminate my saphenous nerve pain from the TKR
No hospital stay required
Thanks
Richard
