@fraaseo: PRRT was a life extender for me. I only know how I was cared for at city of Hope, but they have strict protocols in the Nuclear Medicine Dept for your best care as well as protection for techs. You will be in the hands of professionals!
Each of 4 sessions require 2 IVs (Amino acids into IV thru blood stream for about 1hr; Lutathera 177 infusion into separate IV - while amino acids continue to flow 15-20min; finally amino acids continue to flow for about 1&1/2hrs. The whole process is 5-6 hours. During this time you hydrate, pee, have lunch, pee, hydrate, nap, pee and hydrate. Important to pee to rid your body of radioactive isotopes often!
I never felt uncomfortable, never nauseous!
I had 4 sessions, 2 months apart. It is important to follow Dr orders regarding medication (I could not have Lanreotide during a month before each Lutathera treatment). Review all meds and supplements with oncologist prior to starting treatment.
When you get home: There is a strict “radioactivity protocol” that requires sleeping single, staying 3 ft. away from others, no interaction with children, pregnant women or those trying to conceive for a period of time. Toilet protocol (cleaning, showering, flushing, etc.) is taught. Basically the radioactivity dissipates slowly until you are clear. However, the Lutathera has hopefully done its work by seeking out your cancer cells and kills their nucleus!
Recouping: I slept more than usual, had less endurance and had to be selective in my activity choices due to limited energy. Just relax and distract yourself with something pleasant. I made sure I visualized the tumors blowing up, particularly when I had a twinge or ache here or there. I took that as a sign my body was working hard to kill cancer! I felt positive my outcome would give me more great times with my family! I was so grateful that I could receive the treatment!
The 4 sessions last about 6months and then you will be scanned to see how much your cancer has resolved!
I think This Lutathera 177 can be a game changer for most NET patients!
One more thing: in preparation for this procedure I arrived at CoHope mentally ready (research), physically ready (exercised) and spiritually ready! If we are prepared to undergo unknown procedures it is so easy to keep our thoughts and actions POSITIVE. You can do this!
