@sueinmn just the fusion of the cmc joint. It is being done to position my thumb in a more natural position. I have nerve damage in my hand due to the syrinx inside my spine and I can no longer bring my thumb into my palm. I have already adjusted to a new way of typing as I really have only use of two of the remaining four fingers for typing. My other hand is normal. Which I am very thankful for.

My team of doctors I have are so skilled, knowledgeable and compassionate. I am truly blessed. I like to call them my Dream Team! Could not have gotten this far without them. It has been quite the journey.

Thank you for reaching out to me. Did you and your friend see an improvement? Doesn’t matter how big or small. To me any improvement is huge.

I was able to resume gardening (with custom cmc/wrist braces due to arthritis.) I can write and paint, sew a little, and hold a cup and glass - none possible before surgery. My thumbs, unlike the rest of my hands, have little pain. I just realized that I type with 3 fingers on each hand (my little fingers are deformed) and only my right thumb.
My hand surgeons were magical, as was my OT. Now a rheumatologist is working with me to preserve as much function as possible.
My friend's creative son designed squeeze bulbs for his camera shutter and focus - don't ask me how!
