Am a former Mayo patient but moved to TN where I was dx by Vanderbilt in 2015 w/BC. I had a mastectomy because my tumor was so large. Due to family history then had genetic testing and found I have the RAD50 mutation. Then chose risk reduction surgery to remove other (cancer free) breast and had bilateral risk reduction Salpingo-oophorectomy. Five years later dx w/primary adenocarcinoma lung cancer. (Was being monitored as a former smoker - had quit 14 yrs prior). First thing my pulmonary doctor who dx said was fyi, this is the #2 (?) highest risk cancer w/RAD 50 mutation. So much yet unknown about this genetic mutation but for now, I’ve chosen to learn all the associated cancer risks (esp. since 9/10 of the top cancers are ones first & second degree relatives, on the side of the family w/this mutation, have had.) I’d rather be safe than sorry and am vigilant about advocating for myself and press for tests when warranted, for early detection.
