Is your soreness due to muscle weakness or spasms?

I had decompression and fusion surgery on L3-L5 in 2024 after spinal injections stopped working. At that point, I had pain, weakness and numbness from my lower back, hips/buttocks and thighs down to feet caused by severe stenosis, degenerative disc disease, gluteal tendinopathy, hamstring tears and neurogenic claudication. I couldn’t walk or stand for long for the pain and foot numbness to start.

Does your lumbar MRI show spinal cord and nerve root compression? Did you have EMG/nerve conduction studies to see what f you have compression causing radiculpathy to legs?

Have you ever had a MRI of your pelvis/hips to see if you have any soft tissue injury or compression adding to your leg symptoms?

Hi Hope, and thanks for all this information.

My lumbar spine is a pathological mess. I had sciatica on two occasions, each affecting a different leg. I did have non-fusion laminotomies from S1 through L4 about 12 years ago, but have avoided fusion.

How was your recovery, and what impact, if any, did the fusion surgery have on your day-to-day life?

My spine surgeon has told me that my strong set of core muscles are all that stands between me and fusion of S1-L4. I'd like to avoid this surgery. But if it does become necessary, I'm very interested in your experience with the surgery and your recovery.

Thanks Hope!

Joe
