Pee Log.

My Surgeon ordered some PT for me to complete Kegels etc. The PT gave me a Pee Log to complete. I have to monitor how much I pee for 48 hours. My first day I peed 15 times. If you've had to complete such a Pee log how many times did you pee in the average day? Also my form says that the average bladder should hold 2 full cups and that I should only be peeing 5-8 times a day..... Are they insane?

Interested in more discussions like this? Go to the Prostate Cancer Support Group.

In my younger days (I'm 67 now), peeing 5-8 times per day seems reasonable - it's more frequent now, and was MUCH more frequent while I was going through radiation therapy.

Some years ago (for something unrelated to prostate cancer) a doctor had me measuring my urine output. It was generally between a cup and a cup-and-a-half each time - so that bladder capacity figure seems plausible.

I’m 77, Had surgery and radiation (12+ years ago), and I don’t pee more than five or eight times a day. I’ll get up once at night, pee some more at 7 in the morning and I’m good till about 11:30. I do remember times in the past when I did have to go every hour or two. I do take Myrbetriq to reduce urgency and incontinence and it makes a big difference.

Many people who are just recovering from surgery or radiation pee a lot more. Maybe As often as every hour at times. I had seven weeks of radiation in 2014 and never had any side effects at all. My brother had five sessions of SBRT, and had urinary problems for a long time, two years later, it’s an ancient history. Don’t consider after treatment issues to be permanent.

I'm 70 and right at 12 months since RARP. After surgery I initially had to pee very frequently during the day and about 4 times during sleep. At first it kind of worried me, but over time it's gotten progressively better and sometime around 5 months it was noticeably better, and then at about 9 months it pretty much went back to pre-surgery frequency. At 12 months I consider I'm fully back to normal and don't really think about it any more. That said, at 71 I do notice that my frequency is very dependent on what I drink and how much. For example, I'll usually get up at least once during the night, and usually twice. But I'm sleeping 8 hours and I tend to consume liquids during the evening before bed. The more I consume, the more I can expect to need to get up. Best wishes.

There is a thing called bladder training, and I believe it often is brought into the therapy with incontinence issues, but I can tell you I am up almost religiously at 4am every day to pee and I'm trying to train my bladder to hold out longer. The idea being that your bladder can develop bad habits if you allow it to, but it can be trained not to "need" to pee as often.

I believe this to be true. I've had to really pee bad during the day and feel like I empty 50 gallons when that happens, but the same sensation at 4am is more like a cup. Habits.

I do not know if I count for this tally since I am a female and did not have RP but I go (and I went all of my life ) 10 - 15 times a day. Joking to the side, as a biologist I do not see how going often can be detrimental to ones health ? Inconvenient in some situations perhaps, but "not good" ???? It is not good if one has to go often but actually has nothing much to pee. Than it can be case of overactive bladder. If you produce decent amount of urine every time when you go that means that you are very well hydrated. Not to mention that you are basically fresh from surgery ! It sounds overly pushy to me, to be honest.
Did you go much less often before surgery ?

I have a feeling that my PT is wanting a base line to see if the Kegels improve this. Bladder training might be next........ < sigh>

Of course you count! 🙂 You have made some excellent suggestions on the forum and to me and I appreciate your insight and wisdom. I'm well hydrated during the day and when I go pee I'm not busting etc but it's healthy amount and it looks like normal pee. I will ask the PT about this at my next appointment. I peed about the same amount before surgery and almost exactly at the same times. Maybe I'm deadlocked on a pee schedule and the PT is trying to get me to realize this?

two cups are about 0.5 liters, 5-8 times per day would come to 2.5-4 liters each day, which is about what you intake in fluids. So, sounds reasonable.

During radiation treatment and for a couple months after I couldn't go more than 15 minutes without peeing unless I was asleep and then I woke up about every hour.

Now, a year later, I go about 10 times a day. I have no idea what is considered "normal"? I did do pelvic floor PT which cut me down to 10 from about 15.

I am almost 72 and had RALP 39 months ago, radiation plus ADT 27 months ago. Post surgery I did not notice an increase in urination frequency. However, I did have considerable dripping and dribbling after the urine stream subsided. Once I started ADT, my frequency of urination increased significantly. I also kept a pee log and sometimes peed 20 times a day with small amounts (4-6 ozs) each time. My urologist told me that the reason for the increased frequency was that my hormone therapy (Eligard) has diuretic properties. Once the ADT left my system, my urination frequency returned to normal (8-10 times per day). I still have the dripping and dribbling, which is annoying and time-consuming.
