I tried many times to talk to her about that and she evaded direct answer until a year ago when she finally opened up and told me why. After that I stopped asking since she had a valid point. She is working 2 jobs and still can not have a worry free existence. She works as media marketing person during the day and is a gymnastic coach evenings and weekends. Her partner is an engineer. One would think that that would make a decent income all together but it does not. Housing is so expensive in the States and there is zero social support basically. She told me that her worst fear is one of ending up being a single mother and not being able to provide for her child a decent life and collage education which is also enormously expensive in the States. Since she works with kids she encountered all kinds of "situations" and also many kids with autistic spectrum which is scaring the crap out of her. Basically - she is afraid to have a child in a country with little or no social support and exorbitant housing, schooling and medical expenses. The reason thus is not "not wanting a child" but not being able to have one according to her merit of what should be offered to a new human being beside love : time, shelter, education and good medical care. That is what responsible person does when confronted with a choice and I had to agree ...
I had babies when the world was a beautiful and promising place (We Are The World was a hit song) and when economy was booming and pandemics were just a "theory", autism and ADD almost unheard of , school gun violence non existent, etc etc. I wonder if I would have a child if I were young in this day and age ... To be honest, I am not so sure any more.
