Biotin, Hair loss, Thyroid and Multivitamins

Posted by Laurie, Volunteer Mentor @roch, Nov 5, 2020

There has been discussions in this group about Biotin, hair loss and effect on thyroid lab tests. I have ignored because I do not take a Biotin supplement. I just realized that that my Multivitamin contains Biotin.

So, if you're taking a multivitamin and are being tested for thyroid levels, be aware that it may affect the result of lab results. There is a simple solution, if your multivitamin contains Biotin, stop taking for few days prior to blood work.

Stopping the biotin just a few days before the test gives a false reading. The biotin actually interferes with the absorption all month of the thyroid medication. Best to separate the times you take the biotin from the thyroid med by a good 4 hours. Take the biotin at bed time thyroid medication in a.m.

I do, as I stated, I take thyroid in the morning, and biotin at night. That is approximately 8 hours between doses.
I still am getting a bad reading for my thyroid blood test. The dr. knows that I stop the biotin for about 3=4 days before testing, she suggested that stoppage.
Very confusing!

I used Mill Creek biotin shampoo and it literally thickened my fine hair. You can buy it on Amazon or GNC used to carry it.

I took a screenshot of the Mill Creek Biotene H-24 that I have been using for years. It has to be what thickened my thin baby fine hair. I didn't like the conditioner though. I hope this helps.

You don’t take any calcium for the bones? The bone damage on Al’s is proven. My thyroid is stable now but I don’t want to go bald. I’m trying to find a safe shampoo if I can’t take biotin. Any suggestions? Thanks

I posted what I have been using for many years. I really believe it helped. I used to have thin baby fine hair. I now have fine hair but lots of it.

Something I remember from a long time ago was my endocrinologist suggested taking thyroid preparation that is proprietary and not generic. At the time apparently there was an issue with a certain manufacturer of one of the generic levothyroxine. That being said I am back to taking a generic with improved absorption due to I believe the dose timing.

Did you have any luck with your hair and nails since taking Biotin? Just finished Anastrozole this past Sept and that can contribute to hair loss/thinning. I'm older and don't expect miracles but would love to have a little extra help have some results. Thanks!

Biotin works on nails, for sure. Tests show that it does not help hair growth. GLA, as in black currant oil, does though.
