Anus cancer
Hi Everybody,
Diagnosed with bowel cancer stage2/3 oct 2020 had operation feb 2021 removed anus tumor with permanent stoma started chemotherapy oxaliplatin a few months later eight three week cycles after four cycles l started getting pins, and needles in hand's, and feet l told doctor he said oxaliplatin can cause nerve damage over time it will go away. Finished chemo end of 2021 had scan given all clear, but recommended precautionary radiotherapy to prevent it's return.
By this time numbness in my legs got worse from toes to backside walked with stick or walker frame hand's also still numb fell over a few times balance not good.
Had 25 visits over 5 weeks radiotherapy another scan all clear cea blood test 1.1 my range of cea tests have been 1.1 to 2.1 they referred me to a neurologist 2022 she sent me for nerve study to kings hospital london diagnosed me with severe sensory axonal polyneuropathy caused by oxaliplatin. They prescribed pregabalin also physiotherapy after 3 visits discharged from physio won't help me . Over 6 months now on max dosage pregabalin side effect to much for me weaned off started duloxetine for 6 month's to max dosage slight improvement but side effects to much. Tried amitriptyline for 3 month's spent most of the day asleep weaned off again. Went back to duloxetine for 6 month's only 100mg dosage now weaned off so that now it's 2025. Finally neurologist said you will probably have to live with it. Last chance is gabapentin starting 300 gm but the good news is I'm still clear and fighting every day. Disappointed surveillance team have moved my scans two yearly bit scary 😨.
Has anybody had simular problem's any advice for me tried all types of shoes also creams does anybody think gabapentin will help.
Kenneth (STILL TICKING)

Hi Kenneth..
So sorry your going through this nightmare. I hope you don't mind if I ask a few questions. I know myself something is wrong in my bowel/anal area. I had a colonoscopy 8 months ago and said mild diverticulosis. Would you mind telling me what some of your first symptoms were? I've had chronic constipation for a year. Not even half a box of ex-lax helps! I've done the increase water and fiber thing to death and stopped eating dairy. I've basically done it all. Drs say I'm just getting older and things slow down. I'm 60 and active. No bleeding but constant insane itching despite over the top cleanliness habits and skin tags . 1 inflamed small inflamed lymph node in my groin so far. Anything you could share would be great. Thanks Kenneth!

Boy! You have been through a lot! You are a fighter! 🥊👍
Neuropathy caused by toxicity may be permanent in some areas. Gabapentin only treats nerve pain. I can’t take that or pregabalin because it makes me too sleepy. I have been on all of your medications.
My recommendation is to work with a nutritionist/dietitian to review diet and supplements to make recommendations to heal nerves and reduce inflammation/toxin damage as much as possible. Daily exercise to increase circulation is helpful to get oxygen and nutrients to your nerves/tissues.
Here is what AI says/suggests:
“Oxaliplatin is a chemotherapy drug commonly used to treat colorectal cancer, but it can cause peripheral neuropathy, which is nerve damage that can lead to symptoms like pain, tingling, numbness, and weakness, particularly in the hands and feet. Here are some approaches to managing and treating nerve damage from oxaliplatin:
1. Medication Management
Pain Relievers: Over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen) may help alleviate mild pain.
Antidepressants: Certain antidepressants, such as duloxetine (Cymbalta) and amitriptyline, can be effective in treating neuropathic pain.
Anticonvulsants: Medications like gabapentin and pregabalin are often prescribed for nerve pain.
2. Physical Therapy
Engaging in physical therapy can help improve strength, coordination, and mobility. A physical therapist can design a program tailored to your needs.
3. Occupational Therapy
An occupational therapist can assist with strategies to manage daily activities and recommend adaptive devices to improve function.
4. Lifestyle Modifications
Diet: A balanced diet rich in vitamins, particularly B vitamins, may support nerve health. Some patients find that certain dietary changes can help manage symptoms.
Exercise: Regular, gentle exercise can improve circulation and reduce symptoms. Activities like walking, swimming, or yoga may be beneficial.
5. Complementary Therapies
Acupuncture: Some patients report relief from neuropathic pain through acupuncture.
Massage Therapy: Therapeutic massage may help reduce pain and improve circulation.
Mind-Body Techniques: Practices such as meditation, mindfulness, and relaxation techniques can help manage pain and improve overall well-being.
6. Monitoring and Follow-Up
Regular follow-up with your healthcare provider is essential to monitor symptoms and adjust treatment as necessary. If symptoms worsen, your doctor may consider adjusting your chemotherapy regimen.
7. Preventive Measures
If you are still undergoing treatment, discuss with your oncologist the possibility of dose adjustments or alternative medications to minimize the risk of neuropathy.
Conclusion
It's important to communicate openly with your healthcare team about your symptoms and any side effects you experience. They can provide personalized recommendations and support to help manage nerve damage from oxaliplatin effectively.”
Hi Yvonne,
The only sign l had was loose bowels nothing major just thought it was something l ate. Working in the garden had to rush to toilet stood up pan full of blood water made it look worse called for ambulance had all the normal tests in a&e.
Suspected lump in anus this was during start of covid they found a bed had mri scan next day confirmed tumor within two weeks had colonoscopy result anus cancer stage2/3 you know the rest. I would suggest to have a mri scan or ct imaging scan to put your mind at ease. I found nobody knows better than yourself when it comes to your body. My two yearly stoll test showed nothing prior to my diagnosis. I'm non smoker/drinker since 2010 vasculitus diagnosed spent two month's in hospital fighting for my life kidneys shutting down had dialysis for 2 month's been clear now 15 years. I wish you the very best in your fight insist on a scan don't take no for an answer.
God bless Kenneth x
Thank you so much! Please take care of yourself Kenneth!

Hello Kenneth- I had rectal cancer but no neuropathy, but I do know two people who did the gabapectin for neuropathy and it worked for both of them, so I hope you choose to try it and that it works for you. Best, Mary
