Pain With Broken Wrist

Posted by glinda47 @glinda47, Jan 24 10:41am

Wed 1/15 I was casted for a broken wrist that occurred the day before after a fall while working out. After the break was set and plaster cast in place, the pain subsided and I even slept well. I was given no info at all except not to rotate the wrist. The following day, the pain was ghastly. The office told me day after day that this is normal. Other than 2 fingers, this is my first fracture and I'm perplexed. I see the doc Wed for x-rays as planned. Taking 2 Tylenol Xtra Strength twice a day. Not much help. Is this level of pain "normal" ? Asking this knowing every case and person is different. Thank you.

Of course you know elevating the wrist and 20minutes of ice. Tylenol won't reduce swelling, reducing swelling can retard healing. I can only imagine how painful it must be. Forteo is said to reduce the pain of fracture as well as speedin the healing process. Nasal calcitonin is thought to do the same though not as well as Forteo.
Your fracture is probably at the height of inflammation now. While resting (what else can you do) keep the wrist elevated above your heart on a pillow. If you are walking don't swing the arm with the poor wrist.

Thank you, gently. Good reminders.

Hello, I have broken both wrists, I have osteoporosis. One brake was displaced and required surgery the other a splint I could remove. I can’t recall the pain you describe from either fracture except for when the nerve block wore off after surgery.
It is good you will have X-rays soon, that will reveal if something is wrong. I hope you have relief from the pain and feel heard by your surgeon.

Broken wrist, declined surgery here. 2 months today, out of cast.
I am not a doctor, but this is what I use for pain.
Comfrey salve, magnesium cream along with homeopathic OTC medication I get at Farmer Joes. I just heard of OTC medication called Nervive nerve relief that I haven’t tried yet.
Hope this helps, I feel your pain, hope to here any kind of update of your progress, since I am struggling with stiffness and creaky fingers.

2 months in cast? Wow, that IS a looong time, but obviously necessary for your particular injury.
I have been out of cast for several weeks now, but still feel tweaks and pain at different times. At first, I thought I was incurring injuries or possibly a re-fracture, but seems that the pain comes and goes. In the last couple of months, I've started lifting again and so far, so good...light wgts tho, so I'm frustrated.
But anyway, I so hope the stiffness and creakiness gets better, and I definitely think it will! Most everyone I know had pain afterwards for quite awhile, so hang in there!!

Have you had any physical therapy? A hand specialist could help strengthen your weakened muscles & ligaments. I have to admit, when I broke my wrist in 5 places, the rehab was the most painful. I remember crying while the therapist maneuvered my wrist and thinking it was torture. I had a lot of adhesions that required breaking down. I used a round ball with a rolling ball inside to exercise it at home. That seemed to help the most along with ice, lots of ice.

Yes, I did have rehab and I think it helped. Not sure. I also believe wearing a wrist brace after the cast came off, was very advantageous. I didn't wear it unless I was having pain, tenderness, needed support for one reason or another, etc. I let myself decide when I needed it without relying upon it.

So sorry you had such a complicated break and the pain during rehab. I well recall how painful the one fracture was, not so much during rehab but through most of the 6 wks of casting. It hurt so badly, I really felt like screaming.

I hope you are fully recovered!!! I can live with the subtle pain and occasional tweaks. Overall, it's sore but that may be what I'll have to live with.
Doing strengthening exercises now, trying to get back to lifting as per before the injury. At my age, I don't foresee that happening, but we do what we can.
Be well! And thank you for sharing.

I don't believe this is normal at all. If the x-rays can't clarify the nature of the problem, other imaging may be needed to do so. I also had a lot of pain after a wrist fracture and surgery, and it was in excess of what would be considered normal pain. I got more imaging and the causes were determined. I know many people who have fractured their wrist and some have opted for surgery and others have not. Anyone who has intense pain after going either route needs more imaging, as this is not normal. Keep us posted on how your situation unfolds.

Thanks for posting, geronimo.
I am much better now as per my response above yours.
My wrist is still sore at times, such as wet weather and when I've used it too much or indiscriminately. I don't expect it to ever be completely healed. After all, I was almost 76 when I broke it, so time is not on my side.
May I as you what was found in the imaging? Was it still fractured?
Thanks once again.

The carpal tunnel release I had had was incomplete and the base of one of my fingers was caught in something and had to be released. I also had the plate removed that had been installed to secure the fractured area of my wrist. I believe that each of these things had been contributing to my pain and lack of mobility.
