Care after hip replacement surgery

Posted by dsparsons @dsparsons, May 26 7:01pm

I am having total hip replacement on my left hip soon. My husband is a disabled veteran and is better off staying at home and cared for by a family member. The stress of having him there would hurt my recovery, believe me. Does the Mayo have any services that will assist a single person coming to have such a surgery by themselves? Any suggestions?

Respectfully, you might consider asking a VA Social Worker although might be out of their scope. The only other thought is somehow to enlist extended family member(s) for 4 to 6 weeks, if you are fortunate to have family able to help. Best wishes

I had a TKR in Nov and was transported to physical rehabilitation center called Reunion for two weeks because I have nobody at home to help. After that I had PT at my house. Ask Mayo about that. Now I’m scheduled for a hip replacement and will do the same thing.

Okay! Thanks for the information. I was beginning to think I was not going to be able to come to Florida to have this surgery done. I just won't be able to heal with him with me. Did you work with a social worker?

Mayo actually took care of it. I told them I had no one at home to take care of me and they got ahold of Reunion. Look up their # in Google. He can visit you all day if you like Best place in Jacksonville. Tell them Don Seely sent you. This will be my 3rd time in 9 months. TKR, GOUT ( Bad,Bad Gout in my feet from too much fructose in jelly beans). Now I’ll be having hip replacement. Dreading it!

No visits, lol! I need to heal, not take care of another person. Thank you so much for this information. I am going to look them up and talk to my doctor's nurse about this. I knew I could not be the only one in this situation. Thanks a bunch.

I wish you a lot of luck! It’s wonderful that you take care of your disabled veteran! You must be a remarkable woman! We need more women like you.

I'm in Iowa City and after care is not provided. However if you are having an anterior then recovery shouldn't be bad. With someone there like friend or family member it was okay for as little as a week. However my procedure had complications affecting the nerve. That's a whole other issue. Please ask your doctor about that.
