Treatment plan questions following my wife's recent diagnosis?
Wife (age72 in good health) was diagnosed with breast cancer (DCIS, Hormone Receptor Positive, IDC)? a few weeks ago after an imaging test and a needle Biopsy. They put a couple of chips/markers? in her, then her doctor referred her to a General Surgeon. The Surgeon gave her 2 options: a Mastectomy or a Lumpectomy followed by 5 weeks of radiation (to be determined by another doctor at the hospital).
She chose the lumpectomy and the radiation. He also said he would make a separate incision to sample a lymph node.
Is there something else she may not be considering in this treatment plan? We are both less than knowledgeable about all this. Thanks for any feedback.

@heyhalle, such a helpful and clear post. Thank you.
Thanks to all. Update on my wife.
I had posted some time back about my wife's breast cancer.
The surgery was successful and indicated no spread. However they did have her do 6 sessions of radiation which she finished this week without much problems (some weird shooting pain). They also had her start taking Anastrozole.
They also had her get a bone scan. Now she has to start having infusions to treat that.
We are both very much appreciative of all of the information and encouragement that we have received from those on this site. Thanks!

20 ReactionsSounds like my story. I am doing the same. I'm 80 and the side effects of Anastrozole would decrease the quality of my life so I decided not to go on it. I understand it's a good drug, but not for me. I wish you both well on this journey and thankful you have each other.

5 ReactionsI have not had surgery yet and am doing some research. I am 75 and was wondering if I have to take drugs or other I was thinking about passing due to quality of life. Thank for your comment.
I am an idiot. I hope you are doing well.
After surgery and you are feeling better, you will have radiation with in 4 to 6 weeks after surgery. I was told the new statistics were only 5 days of radiation needed. I start mine in 10 days. My oncologist offered me this drug and supported me in making my own decision. This is our decision, and we are in the driver's seat with this cancer. Keep doing research. Hope this helps
