I asked my radiation oncologist about my pre-existing HFpEF (heart failure with preserved ejection fraction) and my paroxysmal Afib and she suggested keeping my upcoming CT simulation appointment as an opportunity to see what we should do. If the CT reveals a challenging anatomy and risk benefit favors no radiation, she might favor skipping radiation therapy altogether if cardiac exposure is an issue. This all sounds reasonable to me, although radiation may have many benefits. (Stage 1, Grade 2, ER+, PR+, HER2-, clear margins.) What I'm reading here has me reconsidering radiation therapy. Is my situation common?

Hello CDK
Ask your doctors about Proton Radiation which pinpoints the radiation to the exact spot and stops short of penetrating the heart and lungs. I recently underwent 15 sessions. Radiation would’ve compromised my already low functioning lungs. My breast cancer favored a mastectomy but my pulmonologist felt my lungs couldn’t handle the anesthesia. Check it out and best of luck.
