Anyone had Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection for residual Colon Cancer?

Posted by mjdavey36 @mjdavey36, Apr 21 1:48pm

After finishing Folfox Treatment for rectal Cancer there is still a residual polyp remaining which the surgeon suggested the surgeon suggested the surgery which would leave mom with a colostomy bag. After talking some more about alternative options since biopsy was negative and CEA blood level had dropped, he suggested there was another option called Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection - where during a Colonoscopy procedure they scoop/cut out the remaining polyp and then perform pathology to determine if any cancer below the polyp or not. Hoping for the best and wanted to see if anyone else had been through this procedure. Thanks!

No need to travel. Dr. Tanya Kaltenbach at UCSF Mission Bay specializes in such procedures.

May I ask was it Nishimura? And do you have pain after with BM? How long did you have to stay in New York? Any other helpful tips for someone about to do it at Sloane Kettering, flying in from California? It’s very expensive and tricky to stay there

Hmm. Wish someone had told me this earlier. I wonder why they didn’t mention it. I could have had this taken care of in Nov. They’re so convinced APR is the only solution. She is skilled at ESD on post radiated patients (this makes it harder)? Hasn’t punctured any bowels?

So sorry! I didn’t get the notification. My flight was canceled and the next one too. Had to reschedule for two weeks from now. Thank you for thinking of me!

Afraid I can't answer those questions. I know she has lots of experience. I've had an EMR and a colonoscopy with her in the last 8 months and both went very smoothly. There lots of information about her online if you do a search.

I read a medical journal article by Dr. Kaltenbach saying that, in most cases, doing APR is almost malpractice because of the availability of non invasive procedures like EMR and ESD. Your canceled flight may be fortuitous if you qualify for a less invasive procedure closer to home.
She's pretty busy, getting an appointment can take time and you may need a referral from another doctor, but I hope it works out.

Hi there! So I had the surgery! How was your recovery? Mine is much slower than I had planned. Two days in the hospital so far, I can’t pee so I have an uncomfortable Foley catheter in, and it hurts to sit, I’m afraid to void back and front. Any tips? I am supposed to check out of the hospital today and fly home the day after tomorrow! I don’t see how any of that is possible.

I would love to read that article I will have to look it up. I had the ESD with Nishimura. I wish I was home in San Francisco but this is the way it worked out.
