Is my cough permanent?

Even after infections have cleared up, coughs can linger awhile. Sometimes they eventually clear up or lessen, depending on the cause. If it’s solely the tail end of ending an infection, it should clear up.

If it’s from reflux or allergies, you have to treat underlying issue to get it to go away. Famotidine helps many reduce reflux. If it’s poorly controlled asthma, maybe see if your provider may want to tweak/adjust your treatment plan.

The older antihistimines are said to be better at helping with cough than the newer, 2nd generation ones (claritin, allegra, & zyrtec), but the 1st generation antihistamines tend to have more drowsiness as a side effect.
