Sleep issues
It’s now impossible for me to sleep more than an hour at a time at night…. Tossing and turning, up to pee, sore hip, RLS, the usual for a 74 yr old. But, I need some sleep, and don’t want to start another addictive drug. I’ve taken .5 lorazapam for 20 yrs, and added a magnesium glycinate before bed. Any suggestions?

@ginger123 that has to be rough. My brain doesn’t sleep well while my body does. It’s called idiopathic Hypersomnia.
My therapist gave me a suggestion and it works. She asked me if I’ve ever heard of green noise and I told her no absolutely not. I haven’t heard of anything like that. So I went on YouTube and was amazed to discover there’s all kinds of colored noise Noise. You probably know of white noise, but there’s also green red pink brown. There’s all kinds of colors and they all do certain things with your brain. You have to read more cause I didn’t quite read it all for me. Green noise works for some reason. My brain sleeps better When I have it. I go on YouTube and search for green noise and up-and-coming some sites that say green noise for say whatever it gives all kinds of conditions that it can help like oh I can’t think of it now, but if you have access to you to go on YouTube and search for green noise, but I don’t know if green is what you need, but when you search up lots of other colors, and if you read the description, you might find something there that will help.
I hope this helps you gives you a suggestion for something to try other than drugs give it a shot. What I do is put my iPad or phone or whatever you’ve got that you could connect to YouTube next to my bed and it plays all night without commercials and it just makes the noise and I have it on quiet so it doesn’t annoy me, but I don’t feel tired like I used to when I wake up.
I’m dictating this because my fingers hurt too much to type so if it sounds strange and looks strange that’s why I apologize. I hope you have a great day and give the green noise a shot doesn’t cost anything. It’s free so let us know if a different color doesn’t have to be green but read the descriptions of all the color and see what might fit for you. OK have a good day.
Thank you so much! I’ll go to U Tube and check out green noise! I appreciate your suggestion.
I found the eight hour Tylenol tablet actually helps me sleep. The problem with lorazepam and other drugs like it is that it doesn’t actually allow the brain to rest properly and of course it’s addictive: addictive in that your body gets used to it and it takes a long time to taper off it. As a matter of fact, current medical thinking is that is not appropriate for long-term use. The drugs in this class has been associated with dementia
Something crazy, but you may feel better if you could do a long-term taper under medical supervision and allow your brain to be free of a chemical. Be careful of supplements. They are not regulated and many have been found to be adulterated with actual drugs. Increasing your exercise, a little at a time, often helps sleep but not too close to bedtime.

Thank you for your insight. I’m tapering from .5 to .25 mg now. Doctor suggested a low dose gabapentin to help, but reluctant to get dependent on anything else. Susan, in a comment above, suggested green noise or other colors, and I ordered a machine. Will start with brown noise tonight.
The long lasting tylenol is a good idea too. Thank you.
I sleep better when I do any kind of relaxing activity that also makes me concentrate which includes reading, meditation, yoga, talking to my cat.
Also try not to sleep. If you try to sleep, the brain rebels and if you try not to sleep, the brain rebels....
My son sent me some white noise night time soft headphones that have been really helpful to me. It is the Snoozeband Max. You can find them at snoozeband.com. They are bluetooth technology and you can pre-set them to turn off in 60 or 120 minutes. I go to sleep fairly quickly. When I wake up at the bewitching 3am hour I just turn them back on and it really helps me to stop thinking. I get into circular thinking where I cannot turn off my brain. This has really helped me. Also like that it is a medicine free approach. You can choose white noise or even musical tones, rain or nature sounds.
I too have trouble sleeping at times due to pain, meds causing achiness, and my dreaded thoughts. I take alprazolam sometimes. Sometimes Benedryl. Mirtazapine works best though. It seldom fails. If I have two bad nights in a row, I take a very small dose because I am affected by medication. My dad took mirtazapine, too. I take it early on in the evening, about an hour and a half before I plan to go to bed. It works very well for me. I have taken gummies with THC, but without, I think it is CBD, because it makes me zippy. I found myself cleaning the bathroom at night, not something I ever do, nor do I want to do. My stepson finds chamomile tea puts him to sleep. I have a bunch of sleep stories that I listen to. Usually, they help. I find them on YouTube: Calm has a few, Jason Stephenson...try them and see what might work for you. UCLA has an app and I like that one too.
I hope you find something to help you.
Thank you. I’ll look into the mirtazapine.
I had sleep issues too when taken at night plus headaches in am.
I changed and take it in mid morning when Windyshores on here recommended to do that. It will take a few nights for your body to readjust but I began sleeping back to normal and no headaches. Hope this helps.
What are you taking?
