putting dental implants when you have osteoporosis
My doctor advised me to fix my dental problems before starting to take the medicine ( bisphosphonate). As I lack several teeth, I need to make implants. I know that my jaws will lack calcium and I shall need injection of strengthening tissue. Still, will implant hold when there are processes in the body that eliminate calcium from bones? Ha anyone made implants with this diagnosis and how it has gone?

I had to have upper and lower implants put in about 3 years ago and I have had lots of problems due to not having enough bone due to osteoporosis medication, which I told the prosthodontist I had taken Boniva for 5 yrs prior to being told I need implants. I had to have bone added to some areas several times in order to place the implants. The dentists I see now said I shouldn’t have gotten them and the prosthodontist shouldn’t have said I was good to go. Due to a failed implant I had to have the bottoms redone. I don’t mean to worry you or anything I just thought I should tell my story so that anyone considering implants that took osteoporosis meds can make sure the dentist checks to see there is enough bone before proceeding. A second opinion is good to get too. Also they are very expensive. Full set cost me 60K. Pain isn’t too bad just the waiting for the process to be over.
My question is a bit different than what is discussed above. I have 4 dental implants in my lower jaw ("all on four") which were very tricky to put in as I had so little jaw bone evn after bone grafting. With osteoporosis will I lose even more bone in my jaw and potentially lose all my lower teeth? I am 55 ans my osteoporosis is moderate to severe. -3.5 L hip, -2.5 r hip and lower spine. I am very stressed. There are no other options if I lose my teeth as I have insufficient bone even for floating dentures. Has anyone had a similar experience or insight to offer?
Thanks for the info - how does one decide on tooth implants vs osteoporosis in hip and spine? I guess a lot of details and expert advice is needed - and both sides look mainly at their profession? Dentists don't really think about FRAX risk and Bone health doctors don't think about when implants are more important or not.
I also have this issue. Doc says implants should not be an issue with Forteo.
I am not using that but instead of implants another solution might be SED. . I’m getting ready to have it later this month. Google the info on it.
Glad all went well. What stage of osteoporosis?
Are you on meds for osteoporosis at all?
I have to decide whether to do an implant on 2nd molar that was removed 3 months ago. Had a bone graft that seems to be integrating ok.
Also, have to decide on what medication for OP as t-score is -5 in wrists, -3.5 in spine. So timing is everything it seems.
I’ve been on Evenity for 7 mos and had a tooth extracted and the implant post inserted just this week. Dental X-rays indicated appropriate bone growth from graft material according to the dentist so I’m hoping this will work. I did not stop the drug during the process because the dentist said the drug is in my system anyway even if stopped for a month.
I'm not sure what stage my osteoporosis was but I was on Prolia. I made sure to follow all instructions by the dental specialists and kept mouth as hygienic as possible. Glad the bone graft is doing well. That is important! Good luck to you.
So am I on SED, June 20th. Will let you know. Recontact about June 30th.
