While it shows some promise in being an additional treatment for osteoporosis, the study concludes that far more research needs to be done. The study also recognizes that the success of both stem cell and traditional osteoporosis treatments are individualized.
@drsdg, if you are comfortable sharing, have you been diagnosed with osteoporosis? Has stem cell therapy been an option you have discussed with your provider?

Yes, I am familiar and have read this study/article. With most stem cells treatments, you will find the conclusion that more research needs to be done. I do agree but studies are slow on these types of therapies since drug companies are not funding or doing the research due to low financial returns. However, stem cells do hold promise in many areas of health care, injury and chronic disease. Costs are high (out of pocket) and yes very individualized to patient outcomes as there are many reasons for Osteoporosis as with most chronic disorders. So, makes sense that outcomes will vary. But, so far, sometimes Stem cells work, sometimes not, but mostly benign in side effects, besides the sore illiac crest where they were harvested if using autograft.
