Breast Metastasized to Liver? Biopsy necessary to confirm?

Posted by billiemoore @billiemoore, May 22 6:05pm

My journey started as simple 1.8cm in breast with 1 lymph node. Bone scan came back all clear. The CT with contrast showed a mass in the liver. Oncology called and wants to move up my appointment to start treatment and I said—I haven’t even had a pet scan yet, (next week) nurse ‘he has seen this a lot and for sure cancer’—what? First, the chances of being in liver but not in bone first is small. She said a biopsy likely will be done regardless of what pet says.

1st-Has anyone had met go to liver but not bone?

2nd-Your experience with this sort of urgency for treatment before you finish pet scan/biopsy?

3rd—has anyone had a CT come back as suspicious but pet scan fine and found cancer with biopsy?

Has anyone used anything outside of chemo to treat with medical oncology bc I do not want chemo unless there is nothing else available to treat.

I have stage 2 breast cancer (1.8 in breast and 1.2 in one lymph node). Bone scan normal, CT with contrast showed multiple lesions on liver, so had petscan and that came back notified liver but was told Oncologist might still want liver biopsy. I’m thinking overkill? Liver biopsies are difficult and don’t want to stir up an area that doesn't need stirring. Anyone here ever have clean petscan but then get abnormal results from liver biopsy?

Meant petscan ‘normal’ for liver

Hi @billiemoore, I wanted to check in. Has metastasis to the liver been confirmed? Did you have a liver biopsy?

I didn’t love the oncologist I had never met had his nurse call to tell me I had cancer in liver before I had the petscan and wanted to treat me with chemo, so found a new one. As it turned out there was a bit of SUV (2.7) on the liver from petscan but oncologist said it wasn’t high enough for breast metasis, reviewed scan with me and no liver biopsy needed, grateful.
