Hesitant to begin drug treatment for my osteoporosis

Posted by artistel81 @artistel81, May 14, 2024

Hello! My first post here as a new member. I am an active 69 year old female who was diagnosed many years ago with osteopenia but now have osteoporosis. When diagnosed with osteopenia I gave several drugs a try. I had side effects from all the oral choices I took, and when giving myself Forteo shots, broke out in hives all over my body. After that, I decided I would take my chances and go the natural route to keep my bones healthy with diet, consistent exercise and Calcium/Vitamin supplements. Fast forward to present time my last bone density scan was worrisome, (a -4,4 T score in my spine). An endocrinologist strongly suggested treatment, (shots or infusions), but I still fear side effects. I am currently trying to educate and empower myself by researching all options. I am already a bit overwhelmed with so many differing opinions. Drugs or no drugs?! The possible serious side effects of drug treatment still frighten me. Has anyone here diagnosed with more advanced osteoporosis, remained fracture free? Am I at such a high risk that I’m doomed without drug treatment? Thank you in advance for any advice, experiences, etc.

I forgot the mention that I’ve been on steroid inhalers —for asthma and rhinitis—for the last 35 years. I’m going to ask if I can go on Montelukast, instead, and use a rescue inhaler when necessary. My grandson just eradicated all of his asthma, except when he has a cold, with Montelukast.

Steroids in inhalers with fluticisone are absorbed by the body. I was doing a long prednisone taper(polymyalgia rheumatica) and was put on Arnuity( fluticisone) 200mcg for my asthma and my former moon face returned.(!). We lowered the dose to 100mcg and I feel it: fatigue and weakness with the reduction. Symbicort/Breyna (budesonide) is less absorbed but needs a 2x day dosing. I am also using strontium citrate with my primary doc- geriatrician and endocrinologist approval.

Yes, the allergy nurse mentioned, when I was first diagnosed with osteoporosis in 2016, that steroid inhalers “strip your bones.” The doctor stuck to the party line, saying steroid inhalers don’t affect bones. I have just started Montelukast, in an effort to halve my inhalers. Allergy shots, as well.

Today starts my 9th week on Fosomax. I seem to be getting leg pains on the day that I take the pill and maybe for a day or two after that. Has anyone experienced a similar issue?

Hi
My doctor never did a bone scan on me. My first fracture was at the age of 64. That's when I found out I had osteoporosis. Am I ticked yes. She never did it because she said I was not high risk. I like you am very sensitive to medication I decided to do the bisphosphanate once a year. My bone density was coming up really well in my spine. Then last year I got diagnosed with Breast cancer had to have radiation. My spine fractured this year april 18th two places t9 and t10. 3 yrs later. So the radiation affected my bone density. I now will have another I.v
June 24th. Then am starting forteo. Hopefully, I do well with it.I don't know what will happen if I don't. Good luck

I have a severe score also on spine but as yet no fractures. Taking fortibone and supplements only.

What about Red Light Therapy? A lot of attention has been given to that. Idk, it's just a thought. Anything but pharmaceuticals. Once you put those pills in your body you can't reverse it.

This is just a thought but what about Red Light Therapy with 'Red Life'? Check out Dr. Jonathan Otto's offer. I believe it costs roughly $800. I heard a story where someone loaned hers to a neighbor because their dog had hip issues and could barely walk and after using the 'Red Life' device was running around the block. Another story was told by someone who had Bell's Palsy and macular degeneration, and their vision is improving. There are some amazing stories out there. I know my husband suffers from this and I'm considering purchasing one myself. I do know that if his situation continues to deteriorate it will be more than worth the investment!

I would love to use allergy shots but I am still tapering prednisone. Some inhalers are safer than others meaning the steroid in them is not absorbed by the body as much as others.
