Anxiety over radiation burns: What can I expect?
Can anyone give me an idea of what to expect from the effects of radiation on the breast skin. I don’t know why I m so anxious about this! I had no anxiety at all about the surgery. I only have to have
5 treatments but apparently the effects are the same as 15. I unfortunately saw some scary pictures when I was looking for moisturizer creams for radiation burn.

You may find it helpful to get some Mepafilm for treatment during radiation. I used it during my radiation treatment. I ordered it online and my oncologist was familiar with it.
It was left in place (breathable material) till 2 weeks after treatment. I didn’t get any burns and minimal discomfort. My skin looked a little red and itchy. I used a silver colloidal cream which helped.
Thank you so much for the suggestion. However it came a little late for me. I had radiation 2 years ago and was just a newbie at the time that I didn’t come here for advices! I just had mastectomy few months ago (brca2), and did get very good advices and encouragement from the ladies on this website. It was a tough recovery for me, but it was an easy one for my sister. She was back to her normal self in a few days and only took one pill of pain killer.
I hope you are doing fine. Again thank you for caring so much for cancer sisters that you share your experiences. I’m sure that will help those that are or will be going through radiation treatment.🤗

Thank You for all the very helpful info!!! I saved your instructions. I just discovered this chat room with Mayo Clinic, it has been so helpful with all my questions. I have a hard time getting my questions answered. I have a great Dr. unfortunately bad bedside manner. She talks at you not to you, like she's talking to a child. But hey! I want a great surgeon, not a best friend!!!

Hello, I’m glad you found the information helpful. If you search for “radiation burn” you’ll find quite a few tips and prescription or OTC creams that help preventing the burn. The women on this forum are very generously in sharing their experiences. The key is preventing it from happening, so use it right from the first day until 2 weeks after.
Remember you are not alone. We’re here to support one another. Do not afraid to ask questions or sharing your worries or concerns. We lean on each other to get through this. I found this website very supportive especially during my early of diagnosis. I pray that you sail through the treatments without any problem. Hugs.
Thank You, I will research this further for radiation burns. I love this site!!! Hugs!!!
What is mepafilm?
Most like meant Mepitel Film, a transparent barrier film dressing, can be used during radiation therapy to reduce skin reactions and improve patient outcomes https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10439668/
