This cramping in hips started for me 13 months ago. I had just started a statin so blamed it on that. But changed to a milder statin and it never went away. I can walk ok for about a block. Any further than that and the cramping gets horrible. Have to rest before continuing to walk. I also have numbness in one thigh when standing which I think is meralgia parasthetica, and sciatic pain both sides starting in my but and eventually going down my legs, that I think is pirisformis syndrome. But I have no idea what is causing these cramps.

Over 8 years ago I had a terrible bout of a flu like illness and immediately after noticed weakness in my shoulder/upper arms. So extreme I have trouble brushing my hair, teeth, doing anything with my arms repeatedly. The weakness is so extreme I have to let me arms drop. But it only takes 10 seconds to a few minutes to recover strength. I had wondered if whatever that was had moved to my hips - but it is presenting more as pain because I can’t let my legs go dead (or I’d fall). Arm weakness was tested very thoroughly- they never found the cause.

Have you had a thorough examination of the issue by a neurologist? That would be the best place to start.
