Anxiety over radiation burns: What can I expect?

Posted by kathyoung @kathyoung, Oct 16, 2024

Can anyone give me an idea of what to expect from the effects of radiation on the breast skin. I don’t know why I m so anxious about this! I had no anxiety at all about the surgery. I only have to have
5 treatments but apparently the effects are the same as 15. I unfortunately saw some scary pictures when I was looking for moisturizer creams for radiation burn.

I will be starting my radiation treatments on Monday 6/2, they still need to look at the CT to see if it will be 20 or 25 treatments but my doctor recommended Mepitel as well as some creams for around the edges of the silicone sheet, she said that she had great success with the silicone covering the skin especially with people who have fair skin.

Mepitel film will be very helpful! I used it for my 6.5 weeks of radiation. While it does not prevent all skin damage, its use goes a long way in preventing serious burns and even moist desquamation (major skin damage). There are numerous medical journal articles regarding clinical trials that show the benefit of Mepitel film. (search terms: breast radiation mepitel) I wish you all the best!

I have fair skin. Had 33 treatments after mastectomy. I used Cetaphil cream. Be sure to apply cream as soon as treatment is done and I applied the cream 3 times a day. At the end my skin was pretty tight and the burn wasn't too bad. As soon as I was done with radiation I used Aquaphor 3 times a day and in a few days my skin started to heal nicely. I still use Aquaphor for damaged skin. It alleviates cracked skin on my heals! Who knew!!! Good luck with your treatments.

Hi,
I used MooGoo Full Cream x3 times daily immeadiately after each treatment & 2 other times generously during the day & put cling film over the top then my bra.
The cling film kept the cream covering my skin in all day long & it didn't transfer on or in to my clothing. It works a treat on my skin. I did have radiation burns & discolouration but it healed quickly & well & my skin was super soft throughout. Even the breadt nurses said the clingfilm bit had definately kept the moisture in 24/7
Good luck 👍
I used the MooGoo Full Cream Moisturiser 500g its a uk product & they do a MooGoo Cancer Care Pack too.
Take care x

Hi. I had 30 radiation treatments after left breast mastectomy last August. My wonderful doctor prescribed Mometasone Furoate 0.1% three times a day until I finished the treatment. I had zero side effects. No burning, dry skin, pain, etc. etc. I am 82 years old so my skin is old. LOL This worked wonders for me. Good luck to you my dear.

I used fresh aloe vera and had no burn until a few days after the radiation was complete. Probably because I stopped using aloe vera right after the last treatment instead of continuing for a bit longer. It wasn’t so bad. I had 20 treatments total. Whatever cream you decide to use, make sure you use it right after each treatment and maybe several times a day and continue for at least a week after the last one. My hat is off to you. I’m so afraid of surgery that i went for lumpectomy instead. Wish you all the best.

You’ll find the radiation treatment the easiest one to deal with. Don’t worry about it. Just make sure you apply cream/aloe vera right after each session (in the dressing room after radiation treatment) and reapply few times through out the day. Wash it off before each treament. Continue apply cream/ aloe vera at least a week after all treatments are done, preferably 2 weeks.
My radiologist didn't want to prescribe cream to prevent radiation burns, so I use fresh aloe vera. I found fresh aloe vera very effective for treatment of sun burn. I figure that the radiation burn is the same as sun burn. I don’t find aloe vera in the bottle is as effective. 🤗
