Glute hematoma

Posted by boolani @boolani, 4 days ago

I had a fall and my right glute was badly bruised. Please advise how long the pain and swelling will continue.

@boolani It might help if you provide a little detail, such as whether you sought medical care to determine whether anything was fractured, your age range and general health, and how long ago this happened.

All that said, I'm past 70, took a slip and hard fall on concrete at the end of September, landing on a hip that has a ceramic replacement joint. Wow, it hurt.

First I had an x-ray to be sure neither my hip nor the implant fractured. I had a hard hematoma, about the size of a softball on my outer thigh. It was so large you could see the profile through my yoga pants! The discoloration began right at the hip socket and eventually extended past my knee.
On the advice of the Urgent Care CNP and my PT, I iced it regularly for several days, massaging around and over the lump several times a day. It took 4-5 weeks for the pain to go away, 6 weeks for the hematoma to dissolve to the point that the lump wasn't visible, and just over 3 months for all of the bruising to disappear. And that was even though I used arnica gel on it every day to help break up the blood under the skin, which Idofor all bruises.

Let us know if you confirmed no fractures and how you are doing.

How long ago did you fall? How did you fall and from how high? Did you fall on pavement or inside the house on the floor? Did you injure anything else?

You may want to make sure you didn’t injure anything more seriously and see an orthopedic hip specialist. You may want/need some imaging done. You could have torn a gluteal muscle/tendon.

Have you tried rest/ice and anti-inflammatory medication (like NSAIDs/Motrin/Advil)? Have you tried topical Voltaren gel to reduce inflammation?

Many thanks for your prompt attention. I fell inside the house while playing with my grand child. I went to ER and luckily no fractures. I am 73 years old. They diagnosed it as Hematoma. I have been resting and also applying ice. Just curious how long will it take to heal completely. Regards

Hi Sue Many thanks for your prompt attention. I am 73 and fell inside the house while playing with my grandchild. I became very anxious and rushed to ER and luckily no fractures. I was diagnosed with Hematoma. I have been taking rest and applying ice. Just curious how soon I will recuperate fully. Regards

@boolani
I have read that it can take weeks to fully heal. In the meantime, you can keep icing and taking NSAIDs for inflammation or applying Voltaren gel. There are also bruise creams you can apply that may help your contusion heal more quickly.
