Swelling and stiffness, 3 years after total knee replacement

Posted by bengalady @bengalady, Oct 9, 2019

I had knee replacement 3 years ago. It is worse than previous knee pain, and getting worse as more time goes by. My surgeon (in another state) says everything normal based on X-ray. Ortho doc here says the same, and said I’m having pain and he referred me to pain clinic for possible nerve block. I want to know WHY am I having pain, although I didn’t call it pain. ROM is 100. They can’t see everything on X-ray. I want an MRI. Want to go for second opinion. Should I tell new doc I’m there for second opinion, I don’t think that’s necessary......I think that would cause some bias, ie they would just say same thing.
Has this happened to anyone ? Thoughts ?
TIA

Thank you for sharing your experience! Wow, I thought I was the only one experiencing pain and swelling 9 years after knee replacements. I tried the nerve treatment once but it didn’t help me. I’ve tried Lyrica and gabapentin also with no luck. Nerve pain is so hard to treat. I have pockets of swelling around both knees as well when I’m on my feet more that 2 hours. I only weigh 130lbs so I don’t think it’s a weight issue. Do you experience this as well? Has anyone else tried other treatments that really work long term. Thank you so much! I’m 67 and a widow.

I am 67 also. I can be perfectly normal and suddenly the swelling happens and can barely walk. I keep a walker in the back of my car. The pain is incredible

I had my total knee replacement done 7 years ago and was still having pain making it difficult to walk. I started getting nerve ablation in the knee 3 years ago and the pain is almost completely gone. It only lasts for about 9/10 months before the nerves grow back together but all you need to do at that point is repeat the procedure! I have repeated 3 times and it's not that difficult to get an appointment. Once pain starts to return make your appointment.
You will not be disappointed!
Good Luck

Hi there! Can you tell me if you're given Versed or something like that so you're not 'awake' during the procedure?

i am bone on bone, did the stem cells but found PRP to be the most effective. I to did the rooster comb shot.

What is PRP? I am bone on bone in one knee and have a torn meniscus in the other. Heart condition prevents surgery because it is considered elective. Sharon

I thought I was the only one having stiffness and swelling. Thank goodness other people are having this issue. It's not worse than before the surgery. It's just a different kind of pain. I was sure hoping I would be pain free, definitely not the case. Even after standing just a few minutes, my legs hurt and ache all the time. I wish there was a solution.

Yes after 3 1/2 years this is happening I am less mobile than just before the surgery...It is os painful
My doc has ordered xrays but not an MRI I am beyond frustrated and losing mobility..I was in the ER about three weeks ago and the amazing ER doc did an ultra sound as a side and was very concerned after she got my heart issue regulated.
I had an appt with my doc aa few days ago and had lab work the Reactive protein is a bit elevated which indicates inflammation for infection .....am waiting for results The doc put is as NON urgent as I non hodgkins lymphoma and am 81
Honestly I am so worried right now if it is infected even though I have e been dealing for three months with this issue I was on the hip surgery waitlist so this is affecting that as well...

Fever is concerning. I am seeing a very good massage therapist/kinesiologist who tells me my fascia is stuck which has been causing extreme stiffness and pain. I am 3 1/2 years out. We are working on it, pain but seems to help. I did every kind of p/t, saw neurologist on and on. I do feel some improvement. I hope you get relief.

I'm 7 months out from left TKR operation, and generally in good shape before and after the operation--until the 4th month when I gradually noticed other joint problems for the first time in my life. I went to a sports & rehab place. They did a sonogram and MRIs on both hips and discovered I had swollen lymph nodes, bone marrow edema (bmd), and osteoarthritis. Now, my thighs don't move naturally, especially in twisting motions or to pick things up, and my lymph nodes are painful and swollen to touch. I have attributed all of this to post-op PT exercises. I was instructed to do "chair squats," extended leg rises, and knee crunches, 3x a day. I was instructed to take pain killers and thus raise my pain threshold so my body could tolerate these exercises beyond normal pain levels. I moved on to leg presses with weights, and squats with 10 lb bells. My young PT instructor was annoyed that I wasn't progressing fast enough and compromising the 3x daily even though my knee range of motion was good. Consequently, I do not advise young instructors in their 20's if you are older. I'm finding that rest and High Strength Tylenol can help, but progress is slow, I back-slide, and walking shorter distances than just 2 months after surgery.

Wow Jim363 I would immediately change pt. I had a similar situation where I had an aggressive therapist pressing my knee to get to 0 extension other exercises to improve my bend and I developed a condition called "angry knee syndrome" or synovitis. I switched pt and my knee calmed down. My therapist told me that the technique they were using is old school and new research is showing that it is not effective for some people. But I am 2 and ahalf years out from my TKR and my ROM is around 100 and stairs without a banister is a nightmare. My knee is still swollen which effects my weak quad muscle and if I over do it, it makes it worse. So it is this delicate balance I have to maneuver. I am open to trying more than just pt . . . any suggestion???
