Can one stop taking prolia after the first shot?

Posted by imatine @imatine, Mar 6, 2021

Hello everyone, my mom is 84 year old and she got osteoporosis since 8 years. She took prolia last October. She started to feel a lot of pain in her legs now. I am thinking she shouldn't take the 2nd shot but I am afraid of the consequences. Did anyone here stop the prolia at an early stage!? If so what happened? Thank you

I would like to know as well...... I have had one shot and awaiting the tests. I'll have to make a decision at that time.

Has anyone had good or bad outcomes from stopping prolia?

@mariannepp I stopped after he first Prolia shot. No ill effects. I believe the complications start when you stop after several doses.

I really wish you had gotten more responses about personal experiences. I am 68 y.o. & have had one injection. I had no idea there were so many complications with prolia. My doctor didn’t tell me anything before she prescribed it. I had started fosamax & had a terrible reaction, so I was just happy there was an alternative . I am dismayed this “alternative “ is not a good one. I will try to find this thread again after I have been off the prolia so I can share my experience with you. I’m sorry it will be too late to help you with your decision. After everything I’ve read, I’m apprehensive about discontinuing it, but I’m more concerned about the long term effects!

leewest, the safest time to stop Prolia is after one injection. The amgen doctors say that you have incurred no risk with one injection. You might want to take care with a different bisphosphonate. Risedronate is said produce lower side effects. Alternately, you might ask your physician to keep careful track of your bone markers CTX and P1NP while you transition to ? I'd choose Forteo but your medical history might indicate a better choice.
One might be boniva IV, or by pill depending on the extent of your reaction to alendronate (Fosamax).
Prolia is still widely prescribed. And some have good gains And with and without side effects.
Bone markers will allow you to determine if you are having Prolia rebound before you fracture, which would recommend a bisphosphonate.
Bless your bones and do keep are thread on your radar.

I also stopped Prolia after on shot and went on daily pill of Raloxifene 60 mg with no ill effects. No significant loss recorded on bone density for 8 years. Now back on Forteo for a boost and then will go back on Raloxifene

I'm 86 with osteoporosis. Had reactions to Reclast. Just had first injection of Prolia. My hair is falling out. I researched on line and only 1% report hair loss. Now I have tachycardia. I am not taking another injection of Prolia. Seems one of the chemicals in Protia can cause low blood calcium which then causes a high pulse rate. I take Pilates twice a week and eat a plant based whole food diet. I believe keeping a healthy body will help the osteo going forward.

Glad to hear that the Amgen docs say less risk if you stop Prolia after one injection. I plan to stop. Too much risk in my opinion. I've had side effects with all these osteo drugs.

I’m 78, had my 4th Prolia injection 4/25. Have not had any side effects. I had 3 compress fractures in my spine plus very sensitive stomach. Two drs said pills were not as good a choice as Prolia. I try to maintain very good dental care. Next Dexa scan is 8/25. I was diagnosed with Afib prior to Prolia. My hair is thinner but I attribute that to age and blood thinner Elequis. My dermatologist prescribed a hair growth solution stronger than what’s available w/o an Rx two months ago. I use it plus I use a scalp massage brush every day. I’m seeing numerous new short hairs around my forehead & temples.
