Can osteoporosis drugs lower bone density?

Wondered people's experiences with any drugs that did the opposite of what was intended?

I am 72 and I just had my annual Dexa Scan- same place, same machine.i have been on Prolia for 3 years with mild gains only. In the last 18 months, I’ve been on Prolia, then 4months on Tymlos (prior to L4-5 surgery, with bad side effects from Tymlos) and now 7 months of Evenity ( joint pain). My lumbar spine improved 10% from the last scan to T score -.8 , right femoral neck lost 1% but left femoral neck lost 19%!! How does that happen? Over all I’m still in the osteoporosis range T score < 2.5%. These meds are really a crap shoot. I haven’t talked to my doc yet though and she hasn’t suggested what’s next in medication. Comments?

Did you follow up bone builders with fosamax?

Fosamx is catabolic not anabolic.

No I have not had this experience. I was just curious if others had had this happen, and with which medication.

My BMD dropped while on Fosamax. Initially it improved quite a bit then remained level. The last year I was on it my spine went from -1.5 to -2.2.

I asked my endocrinologist about this and she said it was because the drug quit working. Not sure about that but that is what she thinks happened.

I'm not sure how these numbers work. I too have stenosis at L4-5. When explaining my Dexa results my rheumatologist said I was at 7%. I have no idea what that meant. He was in a bad mood, so I didn't question him. Any clue?

Tell him you need an explanation. Don't settle for less. Your body..protect it. His mood should never dictate your need for information.

How many years were you on fosomax? If I understand correctly 5 yr. Is the maximum time recommended to be on this medication. Is it the first Osteoporosis drug you have used? What has he recommended as the follow up drug and is he talking to you about a plan for t
A drug sequencing that will give you the best outcomes? If I understand correctly a bisphosphonate as a first drug followed by a bone builder like tymlos, forteo or evenity may inhibit to a degree the positive changes of a bone builder. Good luck. Do the research. We must advocate for ourselves and not take a passive role.

I was on for just over 5 years. The reason it was over 5 years is because I delayed my follow up appt with my PCP and didn't want to stop it until I saw her.

It was the first osteoporosis drug I used. I fractured T8 one month after my 5th anniversary on it but I didn't know it at the time (attributed it to a muscle pull). In fact, I even stopped Fosamax after seeing my PCP and still didn't know I had a fracture at the time. A month later I went back to her for a referral for physical therapy because my back pain hadn't subsided. She ordered an xray which revealed the fracture.

I was referred to a rheumatologist who started me on Tymlos. I tolerated it OK (had some side effects) but my insurance company revoked my pre-authorization after 4 months.

I switched to teraparatide but intolerable side effects so I stopped taking it. I sought a referral to a Stanford bone specialist and saw her in April. She started me on Evenity and I am doing great on that - no side effects.

I am unsure if the five years of Fosamax will blunt the Evenity but I am hopeful it may help.
