My take is that PMR is often triggered by a virus or a virus-type vaccine, judging from the number of folks that got PMR after Covid or a Covid vaccine. Having a pre-existing auto-immune disease (I had psoriasis) is also a contributor.

It's reasonably well documented in the research literature that the Flu vaccine can be a trigger for PMR for people have a predisposition to develop PMR e.g. Northern European genes.
