Can osteoporosis drugs lower bone density?

Posted by tkdesign @tkdesign, 2 days ago

Wondered people's experiences with any drugs that did the opposite of what was intended?

@tkdesign Apparently Prolia does lower bone density.

If you are saying that this was your experience can you tell us what osteoporosis drug you took and for how long. Also was the post med dexa done on the same machine as the first? What does your prescribing physician say about this?

No I have not had this experience. I was just curious if others had had this happen, and with which medication.

@gravity3 there are two Facebook Groups that give information - one is about side effects and the other about compression fractures due to taking Prolia:

Prolia (Denosumab) Side Effects Group

Prolia/Denosumab - Multiple Vertebral Fractures After Stopping the Drug Group

People in those groups have shared information and recounted their personal experiences. You can search them through the Facebook search window.

I lost bone density on both Prolia and Evenity. The first 2-3 years, I gained on Prolia and only one hip was still in the osteoporosis level. The next year, nearly all of my numbers had gone backward so my doctor switched me to Evenity. My doctor and I were both shocked when my numbers continued to decrease after a year on Evenity.

Hmmm! Prolia was your first medication? How about a consult with Keith mc cormick. He may have some insight.

I can't take most of the osteoporosis medications. One thing I am doing is almost doubling the amount of weight-bearing exercise I'm getting. I'm up to 3.5 hours a week.

I also have osteoporosis discovered after a compression fracture. I tried Evenity and Reclast but had pretty bad side effects, with some improvement though.
Trying a weighted vest for walks with dogs next!
