SBRT finished, now have proctitis

Posted by gshep @gshep, May 16 8:22am

Has anyone experienced proctitis and hemorrhoids flare up, after and during SBRT treatments. I’m miserable. I’m 1 week out and can’t do anything. Doing sitz bath. I’ve tried hydrocortisone suppositories, no help. Dr just put me on dicyclomine. I’m not to sure this is helping either. After deficating I hurt bad. The biting during urination and weak stream I can deal with. This is nearly unbearable. Anyone have any other suggestions

Metamucil may actually be irritating you. Perhaps switch to MiraLax - osmotic which takes on water.
My go to is the old fashioned Mineral Oil - you go smooth and easy, no pain whatsoever. Recommended to me by GI when I developed a fissure - oh man, that was a killer!! All the fiber I was taking made it much worse. Your situation sounds similar. Best,
Phil

Thanks Phil. I am also doing the mineral oil. How much mineral oil did you take and when did you take it.

Hey bud, I usually took it at mid day for a BM the following morning. Your system may be different in terms of transit.
I guess it was 2 tablespoons or thereabouts. Every other day should do it because it does coat the lower GI tract and has a residual effect.

Yes, I second that. Fibre is a known irritant for proctitis, and Metamucil is a fibre supplement made from psyllium husk.

Perhaps oat fibre (e.g. eating oatmeal) would cause less irritation? It would still help move stuff through, but with less scratching on the way out.

i had to months of radiation. 6 months after developed radiation proctitis. I'm considering HBO therapy if i can stand the enclosed space. But i recently found an NIH article that used sucralfate paste enemas to treat the inflamed prostate area. Less threatening to me and much easier to do. I'm going to discuss with R/O as an option. If you google sucralfate paste enemas there are some interesting studies re its efficacy.
Best of luck,
