I procrastinated starting Evenity for over a year, as I was very nervous both about the side effects and the effect on my long-term health. I finally started it in May 2024 and completed my 12th treatment in April 2025. The only side effect that I experienced was pain at the injection site for the first two or three treatments. About four hours after getting the shots (in my belly), it felt as if I had had surgery and the wound was in the process of healing. The sensation only lasted about eight hours. When I woke up in the morning, it was pretty much all gone. Other than that, I didn't notice anything other than little twinges here and there, not pain, just my body telling me where the medication was working, which, apparently it was! My spine had been at -3.4 when I started, and when I finished, it was at -2.6. I couldn't have been happier when I got those results.
There are many people who do suffer painful side effects with these medications, like @aspirecreative above. I think we don't hear as much from the folks who don't have side effects. That's why I mention my experience, to help alleviate your fears.
On a next-steps note, I just took my first Reclast treatment. Now that one I was really afraid of after reading the blogs! I went all out trying to prepare my body for it. I drank two quarts of water throughout the morning before my appointment, and then I asked the nurse to give me a saline drip alongside the medication. I also ate a non-inflammatory/anti-inflammatory diet for a couple of days beforehand, and I made sure that I took my magnesium (magnesium helps to relieve muscle pain). Lastly, I took my doctor's advice and took a 500 mg Tylenol about an hour before the infusion, and another one about four hours after. When I got home, I continued drinking lots of water and even an electrolyte drink. It's now been 48 hours since I finished my infusion. I have felt completely wrung out and tired, and I have no appetite, but that was about it for the first 24 hours. Last night, I developed pain in my eyes when I moved them right and left, so I went to see my optometrist this morning. He said that it was probably muscle pain - he didn't see anything that indicated anything more serious. All in all, it's been not too terrible so far.
I wish you all the best with your Evenity experience, @dbamos. I hope it goes easy for you.
Kind regards.
Hello @wilkenl,
I also appreciate your post about your experiences with medications for osteoporosis. As @dbamos1945 posted, I also need to make a decision about which drug to take for bone loss. I can tell that you followed a good protocol before starting treatment. I always admire a proactive approach, and yours was great!
You've provided some great encouragement!
