Forteo Question

Posted by marianjw @marianjw, 1 day ago

My doctor in the Endocrinology Clinic has recommended Forteo injections following my last DEXA scan showing increased bone loss after taking Reclast yearly for 2 years.
I would like to know the experience of those who have taken Forteo as I make a decision.
I am 84, have some balance issues due to an end stage arthritic knee (I am also deciding whether to do TKR or Cortisone injections.) Otherwise in pretty good health. Thank you!

I think I’d start out with the Cortizone shot first it may take a couple of times and then I would try Physical therapy because as I say surgery is the last resort take care and good luck

Did this work for you: cortisone and PT?

I have been on Forteo for 7 months now, almost 75 years old, and have been very pleased with my decision. I had very minor symptoms the first day or so, mild headache, but nothing since. My calcium and albumin levels are good. I feel stronger and my lumbar bone fractures are healing or have completely healed by now. The big reveal will be the bone marker and bone density tests at one year.
I hesitated and researched for 6 months before making the final decision to start Forteo, but am glad I did. My endocrinologist strongly advises no cortisone injections as they lower bone density and increase risk of bone fractures . It is expensive and I don't love giving the daily injections but strong bones, no fractures, and active living are worth it.
Good luck to you as you make your decision.

I’m not familiar with Forteo I’ll have to look it up. Sounds like you’re doing well. See if it’s something I could do

The the Cortizone shot didn’t really last too long but maybe a second one would work, but that Cortizone does weaken the bones so so I’m just putting that off. I’m just waiting for the sis to get better and to see if the other knee that’s compromised. I’ll be better after that but PT yes it has worked very well for me it’s work, but it’s not like too much. They don’t put up a lot on you like they’ll do like three or four exercises at a time like two sets of 10 repetitions each. I’m now getting to do a stationary bike to help loosen up the knee, so I’m kind of excited about that. I think that will help and help me mentally. They they take a measurement of how far you can bend your knee and once you reach the 20 mark then they’ll let you do the bike so you just have to be patient and wait work with your PT.

I gave myself injections of Forteo for 1 year (12 mos.). On the 13th month I was diagnosed with breast cancer, early stages and only had to take 2 weeks of radiation. That was 12 years ago. This past July I was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer in 1 breast. Im doing great and plan to start Prolia in a week. Praying for you!!!!
