Has anyone had kyphoplasty for an osteoporosis compression fracture?

Has anyone here had kyphoplasty for an osteoporosis compression fracture? Did it help with pain? How long does it last? How long did it take to heal? Would you do it again. My doctors want me to do this and I'm terrified.

@trec55

I had kyphoplasty done on my L1 fractured vertebrae. It immediately stopped my pain in that spot.

What type of physician did the procedure? Thank you.

Dr Robert J. AIN MD at Kansas Spine and Speciality Hospital Wichita Kansas. As far as I can tell he's a MD, but specializes in pain management.

I have had two Kyphoplasties for fractures. One was a double and the other was a triple. They were done thru Inland Imaging Interventional Radiology group. It is an extension of the same people who do Xrays, MRI, CT scan, etc. The Kyphoplasties were done in the hospital, the double one as an inpatient and the triple one as an outpatient procedure.

Did you have severe osteoporosis? Did your kyphoplasty cause second procedure? My doctor said if I have it done the weight of the cement would cause other vertebrae to fracture. Thank you.

According to my cancer clinic I had severe osteoporosis, but they have really made a giant mess of my medical records. They have me listed as having a family history of Osteoporosis, which is absolutely not true. Zero history on either side of my family and my Mom was told she had the bones of a 16 year old when she was in her late 80's. The reason for the triple Kyphoplasty being needed was hospital staff ran a heavy hospital bed into my bed hours after my double Kyphoplasty and fractured 3 additional vertebrae in my spine. Prior to that, I had been feeling great from the double Kyphoplasty and was able to walk with support by holding the railing in the hallway as a precaution. The double Kyphoplasty was to fix L2 and T8 at the same time. I have Multiple Myeloma Cancer and had six fractured vertebrae, added one, then another from car wrecks, added a 9th from barely wiggling a garden hose and half empty light weight planter a few inches (didn't lift either one) and then went from 9 to 12 after the hospital staff broke L3,L4,L5 from the bed slamming incident and more while hospitalized and still in my bed. I had originally not wanted a Kyphoplasty because it was described as a longer, less successful and more painful procedure to me by a clinic I ended up not using. I hope my answer helps a little bit. Wishing you the very best, no matter what you decide. I was very excited and hopeful after getting my double Kyphoplasty until they injured me and really put me in a world of hurt, unfortunately. I did do a backside into major pain again after my triple Kyphoplasty, not quite sure what to do now, as I am not a fan of taking endless pills, but the horrific pain has really been an eye opener.

Thanks for answering. I'm quite confused about what to do. Hope you're able to find something to help. I'm afraid of doing kyphoplasty after doctor said the procedure would keep on causing other fractures. So I was hoping to hear from others that were told that and did well.

If you are possibly having surgery at some point for stenosis or bulging disc impingement on spinal nerves the less cement in the spine the better is my understanding. I have had 4 compression fractures, L4,5, T12 in 2024, and L 2 in 2016. Kyphoplasties in L2 and T12. My back pain management doctor is very reluctant to do more because if I can get my bones strong enough for surgery the less kyphoplasty the better. Please someone chime in if this is incorrect!

Yes. I had a kyphoplasty because of a thoracic fracture due to my osteoporosis. (I wasn't on any medication at the time.) Yes, it did away with my pain right away and I then went on medication for my osteo. Previous to that, I had another thoracic compression fracture but I wasn't aware of kyphoplasy. I suffered in tremendous pain for months and months. If I ever had another fracture, I would definitely opt for the procedure again. It was worth it.

I’ve had kyphoplasty on 10 vertebrae in five separate surgeries. The original three fractures were more obvious because I was lifting something heavy. The only thing that stopped the pain was the kyphoplasty Surgery. I was immediately relieved of the pain. seven years later my osteoporosis has gotten much worse and I’ve had four procedures this year. They are also much hard to recover from the original one. These compression fractures were caused by just lifting objects of approximately 10 pounds which is very scary to me. I have taken prolia for a number of years And I’m now on Evinity. I’m hoping this will give me some bone growth. I also started physical therapy. This has also caused a coverture of my spine and poor posture. I’m working on this as well, but I’m not sure if I can correct it much.

In December I had a compression fracture on L2. The pain was so SEVERE, I couldn't get the Kyphoplasty fast enough. I had to wait a couple of days because the hospital was full and that's kind of fuzzy because I was on so much morphine. The surgery took away the terrible nerve pain. I had another fracture on L1 in January and had another Kyphoplasty. I still have some aches and pains after sitting a long time but 5% Lidocaine patches at night plus Tylenol help. Now I'm a dilemma as to what to do for osteoporosis. My surgeon and primary doc wanted to put me on drugs immediately but my dentist would only approve Forteo. I tried it but had a bad dizzy spell the next day and that scared me. If I fall I will be worse off than if I never did anything. I would like to do something but trying to sort out supplements has been difficult. I don't have an appt with a Rheumatologist until August. I'm 90.
