Does anyone have experience with a Reverse shoulder replacement?
I am scheduled for a reverse shoulder replacement in September because the rotator cuff repair (3.3 cm) did not work. The idea of reversing parts is a little unnerving.

I had a TRSR on 5/1. In at 7:30am and out at 1:30pm. The nerve block wore off in ~ 24 hours. I was waiting for the pain but thankfully and gratefully the pain was minimal. I took a couple of ibuprofen every other day. The sling was okay but my arm became itchy so I started not wearing it around the house. I am doing a lot of light tasks but no lifting. Again thankful but so far so good. I started PT two days ago. Did the 3 per day exercise regimen before that. If you have a nerve block be careful if you take your arm out of the sling to change shirts. Your arm will have no feeling or control and it will flop around like wet spaghetti. Make sue to have someone to help and support your arm. Good luck.
I had my left knee replaced a year ago, that was way more painful than both shoulders.
I have to get my right hip replaced at one point, I am a little nervous about that.
@rainerhans , I’ve had both knees replaced, not at the same time, Knee surgery recovery is so painful, so I know what to you mean. I’ve also had my left hip replaced. Don’t be nervous, it’s actually not a bad surgery or recovery. When they got me up, I was bracing myself for the pain . I was surprised when there was I didn’t no pain at all with standing or walking! Only pain was from the incision, and it was very minimal. I didn’t even have PT, the surgeon said to walk.
Good luck on your surgery, if you made it through knee surgery, you’ll do great!
@rainerhans, I feel better about my upcoming surgery after seeing all the positive posts.
Thank you to everyone that has responded.
@alumate , I’m glad to hear of your successful outcome from your surgery. Like you, I have been in chronic pain for the last five years. I’m scheduled for my surgery May 30th. Reading all the positive comments has eased my mind a great deal. I’ve had 2 knee replacements, and a hip replacement, I don’t know why this one has me a bit nervous. If my results are as good as yours, I call that a win!
Wishing you the best outcome possible. I understand Knees are much more difficult to recover from. I have no doubt you will do great:)
@alumate, thank you for your well wishes :).
Hello to all,.I had a reverse shoulder replacement 2.5 years ago. Still struggling because the shoulder doesn't rotate from the top as it used to. My arm extends straight and bends at the elbow for rotation. Hair washing is a trick, and PT was difficult because they don't really have many reverse replacements.
I will caution women with mammograms! When I explained to the tech that I can't put my arm over my head, she came around, grabbed my fingers and pulled it over!!! Muscle damage and bruising as a result.
I still have neck, mid back and scapula winging. Trigger point injections help the most. Good luck!
Thank you SO much for this post. My TRSR is scheduled for May 19, and I have been very worried about it, especially the level of pain to expect. I know everyone is different, but now I know I may do fine. This is my first joint replacement, and I need several more (other shoulder, both knees).
Best of luck to you. I don’t know if this is significant but I know of two people who had shoulder replacements ~ 5 years ago who had pain. Another friend had one in December of 2024 with very minimal pain. Possibly the procedures and newer hardware might result in less pain? Again best wishes for you.
