Colonoscopy and Endoscopy: Preparation

Posted by suzanne2 @suzanne2, Jul 11, 2020

On Tuesday I have a endoscopy and colonoscopy scheduled at Mayo in Rochester. Looking for advice on the golytely prep. Not looking forward to it especially in a hotel room. Have to begin drinking at 6 p.m. Monday. I am having issues so not a routine exam! One that involves biopsy. Any advice to get me through the prep would be appreciated.

@robertatheriveter - Glad to hear the sodium sulfate, magnesium sulfate and potassium chloride combination (SUTAB) worked much better to prep you for your colonoscopies.

You may have seen my post earlier in this discussion about trying the sodium sulfate, magnesium sulfate, and potassium chloride combination (SUTAB) pre-colonoscopy https://connect.mayoclinic.org/comment/1289181/. It did not work as well for me as the liquid and made me rather ill. Like you, I felt like I did not sleep well the night before, with setting various alarms at intervals to take more tablets and water.

My husband has done the PEG 3350, osmotic laxative and electrolytes combo (Golytely), but he has to start earlier the day before than recommended on the container because his system runs about 2-3 hours behind where mine would be having taken the same amount of prep.

All that to say, it seems that different preps work best for different people. But @michea, I'm with you that the whole prep thing is just awful. I guess you have to experiment with what prep works best for you and your body, though this can be a crazy experience.

@ggr - your doctor had you do a miralax and the gatorade mix, and it worked well? How did you find it better than the prep or preps from the pharmacy?

The miralax/gatorade worked well. The miralax has no taste like the stuff from the pharmacy. I find that hard to choke down.

I can have any the go-lightly, moviprep or suprep. the last two are less liquid and easier to tolerate.
My choice.

I have a tortorus colon and the miralax prep was a nightmare. The prep took 2 days to come out and the diarrhea was uncontrollable. Colonoscopy failed could not get pass sigmoid because of diverticula’s disease. They are recommending surgery. I am so scared just had open heart in 2022. Can someone help I would have to drink this prep again for surgery I would never make it to the hospital.

Have you and your doctor discussed taking Sutab instead? It's 12 pills taken at specific intervals. It worked better than the liquid for me and was easier to take.

I was thinking same thing ! Take the pills . I’ll do that next time . I can’t handle drinking the gallon of that prep . It’s awful . That’s was the only prep my insurance covered last year ( and each time I’ve had it )!!! I’ll pay out of pocket for the pills next time .

Hello @kathy49, I second what @gingerw said about colonoscopy prep. I will be 82 in a couple of months and swore after my last colonoscopy at 78 I would never have another one but things change. After my annual checkup the topic came up again and after weighing the pros and cons with my primary care doctor I decided I would schedule one. My last prep which I thought was OK didn't work out very well so this time I have to take an advanced prep which involves the tasty liquid (yuck!) along with some laxative tablets. I did the pills...ohhhhhh..I thought "it'll be so much easier than drinking all that stuff"..noooooooo!!.. consumed the 1st round of pills (you take so many and then wait a few hours if I remember right..) and nothing .. then started the 2nd round.. cramping soo extreme.. and then finally "it started".. the pills are very large.. so the last time I drank the stuff.. and you know.. they said I could have chicken broth.. funny thing.. the stuff tasted better than the chicken broth...I had to do a "2 day prep" and ended up not eating anything solid for almost 3 days..if they tell me pils again..I will run!! And I'm usually very complacent...and cooperative.. the doctors just say 'you're so nice.." not always !! No more big pill prep..no more nice little old lady if they try!!

I see some comments about MiraLAX and Gatorade. I’ve never tried that, but maybe you wouldn’t have to take the prep for surgery. They probably just wanna make sure you’re kind of cleaned out. I hope you don’t have to do it again. I did it once about 13 years ago, the liquid I mean, and for some Reason it didn’t bother me and I’m so grateful. I only drank half of it though, because I hadn’t been eating very much. They said I was fine! So, maybe if you’re smaller or you haven’t been eating a lot of food, you don’t need all of it. At least I didn’t. Good luck!

The pills are not too bad if you distract yourself with an interesting movie on the TV. The distraction is the key. Also regarding the chicken broth, go to your favorite Chinese restaurant and get the won ton soup broth minus the won ton noodles. It will be a salty flavorful liquid soup that is a substitute for the food one is missing during the prep.

Well for me.. 12 pills total.. 6.. one every 15 minutes with 8oz water.. no time for distraction.. just swallow and gulp!! Then about a 2-4 hour break..and do it all over..this time with horrific cramps!! And they were so huge!! Perhaps my gastro used a different kind.. thank you for the suggestion about the broth..that helps alot!!!!

Some say no more after 75 I guess some say 70. But it does make a difference your history and lets say you reach 75 but have not had one for 8 years....rather be safe and have one more while still easy (relatively) to do prep. This will be my third with no history of polyps. Doctor ordering this at Mayo is not in the GI department and is fine with me using any of the preps. It is routine. Just seeing if anyone had a story about taking xxx and not complete clean out? I also think it might be more difficult in terms of electrolytes etc. the older you are.

Ended up with Moviprep (generic) split dose. Lets just say awful!! But it worked, cleaned out and 3 Tiny Polyps removed. I would say as an older person the prep was rougher.
