Burning and itching under skin with no rash

Posted by dmmeyers62 @dmmeyers62, 2 days ago

Is anyone experiencing this with their peripheral neuropathy? Went to Dermatologist and now to Neurologist. Also sending me to a Alergerst. I have celiac disease and dh rash among other autommune diseases. The iching is worse at night but it is driving me crazy. Help!

Where do you have the burning and itching?

You will want your neurologist to do a skin punch biopsy of your thigh and calf/ankle to test you for small fiber neuropathy.

Do you have diabetes? Do you know the cause of your neuropathy? It will be important to determine the cause of neuropathy so you can treat the cause. If it is idiopathic, you may only be able to treat the symptoms.

I have idiopathic small fiber neuropathy and it started with burning and pins/needles in my feet that was worse in warmer weather and at night. I take alpha Lipoic acid, acetylene l carnitine, and magnesium supplements as well as use Salonpas lidocaine patches and capsaicin cream for nerve pain. This helps my symptoms.

I also have itching in my palms of my hands and I believe it is also tied to my cervical spinal stenosis, radiculopathy and carpal tunnel. I had carpal tunnel release surgery on my right hand and it improved and will have the left hand done later in the year. I am having cervical spine surgery next week to address the c6-c7 herniated disc causing neuropathy symptoms radiating to my arms/hands/fingers.

I have iching and burning all over my body. Seen one neurologist and had a EMG and then went to Mayo neurologist who put me on duloxtine 60 (already on gabapentin 900). Came back home now seeing a new neurologist. Off both drugs because had side effects from gabapentin and recall on duloxtine. ( was up to 2800 on gabapentin doctors back here kept upping) I am pre diabetic but my celiac is really bad . My antibodies are still off the chart and I can't even eat gluten-free process foods. Thinking of going back to Mayo they were the only ones that were able to help before. I am experiencing breakouts with my dh rash Also. Not sure if it's all related.

It would be good to see a nutritionist/dietitian to help you with pre-diabetes and celiac and prevent full blown diabetes. Diabetes is definitely a cause of neuropathy so reducing blood sugars is important.

Also, it would be good to get a small fiber neuropathy skin punch biopsy since this won’t show up on EMG/nerve conduction studies or MRI.

I worked with a dietitian at Mayo Arizona. Had breath testing which I have intolerance to sugar alcohols and chicory root. Not uncommon to be pre diabetic and high cholesterol when on gluten-free diet. Also was told my celiac is so bad it has caused so much damage to my GI track . Have done reading also can cause damage to other parts of your body. Told my antibodies might never go down because I have it so bad. That's why I wonder if it has a connection. I had a MRI also but will ask about the punch tests. Thanks

Have you seen an immunologist for allergy testing? Did the Mayo Clinic dietitian talk with you about an anti inflammatory diet?

Hello,
Sorry about your condition and discomfort. Different people call it different things such as burning, tingling, itching, numbness, or pain, or a combination of things. And different people have different symptoms depending on their body's response to the condition. I have a combination of tingling, burning, numbness and pain, but no itching. Seeing a good neurologist, in my opinion, would be the initial best thing to do and then maybe referred to other specialties.
I wish you the best and have a serene evening,
gus
