Baker’s or popliteal cyst

Posted by ellerbracke @ellerbracke, Oct 11, 2019

Is it possible to develop a baker’s cyst overnight, for nor obvious reason? I woke up this morning with a small lump in back of my knee where there usually is a depression between the tendons. I does not really hurt very much, but it makes it harder to straighten the knee. I did not do anything unusual or especially strenuous yesterday, nor did I hurt or twist my knee in any way.

Thank you, I did have a set back which caused a lot of pain and my lower spine flared up. I did restart my knee exercises from PT. And have been right on it. My PT SAID NOT TO STAY UP FOR MORE THEN 15 minutes at a time. So I do my exercises then go for a 7 minute walk out & 7 minutes back. Then I ice and sit or lay down for 1/2 hr or hour. So far it seems to be working. I don’t irritated as much with 15 minutes rain hour so a day so I think I come up on eight weeks in June sometime so like Colleen I’m hoping that it works out that everything‘s better by eight weeks. I’m glad you’re doing well. I know some people don’t have a problem with that but some people really have a lot of pain and this site really has helped me and encouraged me.
Don’t know if you’re a mother, but if you are happy Mother’s Day, I hope you enjoy your day

Thank you so much. Your comments about the exercises for your hip, ankle & low back struck me bc I have problems there also. I was only given the heel slide, rising the leg for strengthening the thigh and a cafe stretch. Loved to know about the hip and ankle. Done you or did you have pain in your ankle Thigh, I have a strong throbbing pain from my thigh to my ankle. I’m glad to hear your doing well on your recovery, it is slow , I was worried when I read a few comments of having this for 3 years! This site is awesome it made me realize how important those exercises are. I’ll be glad to go on my walks again. How long did it take you to start walking & hiking? Well thank you for your encouragement.

Hey @cookiezz, sorry it has taken so long to get back to you. I have good news on my continuing journey. Things have improved quite a bit. My physical therapist gave me new exercises this week. I hadn't see her for a while. But this week's appointment uncovered a jam up in my lower back that she was able to release. I'm confident that things will contine improving - hopefully faster.

You said you were "only given..." The exercises you were given are likely to be different than the ones I am given. The PT will tailor your exercises to your needs, related to the injury and your physical abilities.

I am happy to report that walking is not a problem any longer. I'm still cautious about jogging or high impact. Hiking will be put to the test in a couple of weeks when I go on a hiking trip. I have tempered my expectations and planned hikes only every second day to allow for recovery in between. No 2 long hikes in a row.

How are you doing?

That’s how I discovered my bakers cyst. It just appeared one day. I go to see my doctor, as usual some times he didn’t show any concern. Just that it’s a bakers cyst and no big concern.
I don’t have much pain. I do rub it every night before bed. As I do rub my both knees due to osteoarthritis. I am now rubbing with shea butter mixed with a little olive oil to soften it. Seems to help my knees at night.

Rubbing your bakers cyst might reduce the size of it and the discomfort it brings. You may be able to completely reduce it yourself by manipulating it which is easier than a doctor draining it.

Has anyone had their Bakers Cyst aspirated? And is it doing ? I’m still having trouble. It’s better and have returned to the gym for exercise on the stationary bike for like 10 minutes and 15 minutes on a treadmill. About the time I think everything‘s progressing better I get severe pain like bone pain a deep ache which is awful. I don’t know if anyone has had that deep ache from the thigh to an ankle. My ankle is rather swollen on my right side so I was wondering if anyone has had this aspirated and if it did any good, then I have to lay low for a couple of days and start over

They tell me the cause of my lower leg swelling is from a popliteal cyst combined with over exertion on treadmill. PT for 5 weeks and little improvement. No pain at all, just swelling.

I just had mine drained. I was told that the osteoarthritis in the knee causes the fluid from the knee to leak out and form a cyst. It can come back. Yes, I did have terrible pain and thought it was a clot at first. They scanned and found the baker's cysts. I now have some pain in the knee and assume its the arthritis. I don't know what doctors recommend. Some say the sac needs to be removed surgically so it doesn't come back. But, I don't know. Any doctor's out there with opinions.

I also have a bakers cyst in my right knee I was told it takes about eight weeks to get better and I could come back and that there’s an underlining reason my x-ray showed minimal arthritis in the knee and I’m waiting to hear about maybe an MRI to see if there’s a meniscus tear other than that I’ve been doing PT ice and heat when I walk no longer up on it for 15 minutes at a time which seems to help quite a bit so I get up and walk in the morning. Sit down and do my housework sit down go for another walk or to the gym and sit down so anyway it is feeling better. It’s about been eight weeks and it’s still kind of weird my other knee kind of eggs also because of they call it cause it’s compensating so let me know if you have surgery and taking the sack out thing if that works I don’t know. I’m just getting frustrated also
