Baker’s or popliteal cyst
Is it possible to develop a baker’s cyst overnight, for nor obvious reason? I woke up this morning with a small lump in back of my knee where there usually is a depression between the tendons. I does not really hurt very much, but it makes it harder to straighten the knee. I did not do anything unusual or especially strenuous yesterday, nor did I hurt or twist my knee in any way.

Thank you so much. Your comments about the exercises for your hip, ankle & low back struck me bc I have problems there also. I was only given the heel slide, rising the leg for strengthening the thigh and a cafe stretch. Loved to know about the hip and ankle. Done you or did you have pain in your ankle Thigh, I have a strong throbbing pain from my thigh to my ankle. I’m glad to hear your doing well on your recovery, it is slow , I was worried when I read a few comments of having this for 3 years! This site is awesome it made me realize how important those exercises are. I’ll be glad to go on my walks again. How long did it take you to start walking & hiking? Well thank you for your encouragement.
I hope you had gotten my reply to your post. I haven’t seen it on here. Your comments about the exercises and how dedicated you aren’t doing them, made me realize how important they are. Plus letting me know your progress with in 8 weeks made me hopeful that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Although you look like your a lot younger then I, I have always been fairly active, I love walking & hiking also, plus playing with my dogs. I’m 73 , I hope I will start feeling better soon & able to return to my normal me in 8 weeks. I first grandson is getting married at the end of August at a beautiful wedding resort in Arizona and I really don’t want to miss it but right now I was feeling about canceling bc of all this. Your reply has really encouraged me so much
my confidence in attending this great event has returned yah!!
Thank you
I’ve had Baker’s cysts behind both of my knees for years, and never any problems. The one in my left knee doesn’t even seem to be there anymore, but the one in my right knee recently started causing me problems. Here’s why: I decided to try to increase my exercise, and know that I’m not a hard-core exerciser to begin with, and so I was doing the treadmill at 3.3 speed on an incline of 4 to 5. The pounding really did a number on my lower right leg and caused a lot of swelling below my knee and a few inches above the ankle. I noticed it when I was at work and my right pant leg felt really tight, so I looked at it in the mirror and it was larger than the other leg by about 30%. I panicked thinking that it was a DVT, but the ultrasound revealed that it was a non-ruptured 2.36 cm Baker’s cyst. Long story short, I’ve never had any pain with this and I’ve been doing physical therapy for about a month. I’m getting better flexibility and the swelling has gone down very slightly, but I’m hoping after another four weeks it’ll start getting back to normal. If not, they told me to see a vascular doctor. It’s just the one leg. Same as Colleen, physical therapy has been an interesting journey in a good way. Apparently, my right hip is very weak and it has been causing me weird balance problems anyway and I attributed it to something neurological, but apparently it is just that I’m weak. So hopefully after a lot of hard work this will all resolve. I hope to give you guys an update in a month or so. So anyone else suffering anything similar regarding the Baker’s cyst, I wish you much success luck and keep up the good work with whatever the doctors are telling you.
I thought it was recommended to have bakers cyst drained? What exercises were given you for this?
Thank you, I did have a set back which caused a lot of pain and my lower spine flared up. I did restart my knee exercises from PT. And have been right on it. My PT SAID NOT TO STAY UP FOR MORE THEN 15 minutes at a time. So I do my exercises then go for a 7 minute walk out & 7 minutes back. Then I ice and sit or lay down for 1/2 hr or hour. So far it seems to be working. I don’t irritated as much with 15 minutes rain hour so a day so I think I come up on eight weeks in June sometime so like Colleen I’m hoping that it works out that everything‘s better by eight weeks. I’m glad you’re doing well. I know some people don’t have a problem with that but some people really have a lot of pain and this site really has helped me and encouraged me.
Don’t know if you’re a mother, but if you are happy Mother’s Day, I hope you enjoy your day
Beginner Bridge
Straight leg rise
Stretch on wall
Supine heel slide
You can also go to u tube or type in to google exercises for bakers cyst
I’m sure I’ll get more exercises next visit with PT
I’m not sure about that. I’ve also read that was a later resort & only if needed. Have to ask your Doctor about that a lot of different views on line.
