Yes, for some strains of NTM, IV antibiotics are used, but then are followed by a course of oral antibiotics because there is a need to fight the hidden, slow-growing bacteria deep in the lungs.
Long-term multi-antibiotic IV therapy is very rarely used due to the complications of managing the PICC line over time.
And IV drugs don't mean "no side effects" when compared to oral medications, they may even have more.
They are definitely an option. They like to try the pills first, but I am gonna demand giving it to me the other way because I have a weak weak stomach and I’m already on medicine.
