I have pain in my right big toe at the joint and underside that is sensitive to walk on. After getting an x-ray I was told it's arthritic and my Dr. offered no other plan or treatment option.
I've looked into red light therapy (photobiomodulation), which I still will do but first decided to try Soundwave therapy (same as shockwave therapy).
I had my first appointment the other day. The toe felt great for a day or so but then the pain returned about 80%. The technician told me it will take from 4 to 8 treatments so I'm hopeful.
I'm feeling pretty banged up with living with type 1 diabetes for most of my life and the resulting neuropathy, joint pains, etc., catching up to me. It would be great to have a method to self treat at home that would replace these recurring high out of pocket expenses.
I do use red light wrapped around my feet, and leg wraps, etc. First, before you buy one, i would suggest go on line and ask what to look for in a red light therapy device. Info might help direct you to a good one. It does take time. My understanding is you can use it more than once a day, and pretty much every day. they have some shaped to fit the foot. also, as silly as this will seem....many years ago, one of my toes sort of was a little twisted out of place....not a good description, exactly, but was not normal, and was uncomfortable. I thought my Dr was nuts, but she said, to increase my B vitamins. My multi already had 50 mgs in them, but i increased the multi B complex to 100mg..........within 1 day, my toe was back to normal. Yours is much different than mine, probably won't work, but just mentioned it, just in case a Dr., might help you connect the dots........I think B vitamins helps with nerves.........but, of course, can only do so much in some cases. Good luck on your search.
i did see info on Sound Wave. I was curious, so i went on line and asked if Sound Wave and the Ultrasound wand therapy were similiar. Info seemed to say they were rather similiar. I have an ultrasound that i bought from Tens Pro, their website and products "seem" to make me feel more comfortable with using their equipment, alho , i would "assume" others are pretty much the same??? But, the ultrasound wand, you can use at home. My Naturopath showed me how to use it many years ago. i rarely used it, but recently, i had a knee problem and used it on that. Maybe, if sound wave helped, maybe this home ultrasound wand might work. For over 25 yrs, i've used myself as a guinea pig, experimenting with things. Altho, I did a lot of research, and newsletters and books from Alternative Dr's, that use all this stuff in their clinics.......I recently found restore wellness center near me. they treat neuropathy without injections or drugs. I did a free consult, and will be going in next Wednesday for first treatment. If you look for a center near you, cautious, there is another place that uses Restore in their name. the one i found takes insurance, the other one does different things, but does Not take ins. I am always looking for different therapies, because being a lil old lady, i need all the info i can get to stay away from drugs and surgeries. Maybe the sound wave will be the treatment just right for you. I hope so. Ultrasound, you are not supposed to use more than 3 times a week. Before i knew that, it worked so well on my knee, i ..um....used it every day for aprx 7 days. Only for 5 minutes each time. I now, am backing off for a couple of weeks, before i start using it properly........if sound wave works well for you, could you let me know? .............
Well my podiatrist said it was part of arthritis and gave me an injection in it and said I could have another one in 10 weeks if needed!!

i hope that works for you. some of these aches and pains we get, just does not have an easy answer. Just for the heck of it, go on google, and type in your problem. start by asking....what can you do for...........then type in your systems. after getting several responses...........go back and re type the same question, but start with .....alternative treatments for....................then one more time and start with natural treatments for.........i do this frequently and get different answers with the different wordings. i was searching on and off for uti's when anti biotics were not working well for me, and one day, out of many, i finally got an answer that works for me. So maybe you can also be persistent, and every few months, or so, go back on google , and keep asking.
Might not work, buy you never know. I would include the big toe pain, and add in that it could be arthritis. Google is extremely picky on wording, but i'm getting used to playing its game. One word, can make a difference. let me know if you got any answers............also ask, can a castor oil pack help a big toe pain, with arthritis etc.........and see what they say. I sometimes use the Heritage castor oil for different things..........it is not the one used as a laxative, it is one used for many different things.....probably not for your extreme pain, but again...........it's only a question. Sometimes one question can lead to more info for you.............
I have had p n for at least 8 years. Now at 89 the pain is down but balance is a major concern. I thought Ihad gout for over a year. Apparently a uric acid blood test did not confirm. I had a tube of Diclofenac Sodium cream that had been prescribed for neck arthritis, so I tried it. Worked great for me.
Good luck.
It felt like someone had stamped on my big toe, but the pain was only at night when trying to get to sleep. The Pediatrist said to get laced up shoes, thinking my foot was slipping and the toe was getting bruised. I wear flat shoes, and the pain was only when off my feet.
Have you tried wearing the compression stockings that cover the foot? Is the pain in the big toe muscular? I have pain in big toes that feels like it's being beat with a hammer, with extreme muscle cramp every so often. I use Hylands dissolving pills for muscle cramp for legs, Frankincense/Myrrh essential oil, and cannabis. Also, if it's muscular, try and walk it out or massage.
Thankyou, not sure, podiatrist said it was arthritis gave me an injection hasn't helped, yet been 6 days. I have tried hyland's, not muscular, more I walk more pain there is!!! Not yet what will turn up, dr says the numerology and my age and walking barefoot my entire life & now we have more hardwood floors than carpeting !!! Still no not right answer but thanks for your reply 😊
Hi Ron,
Disclaimer: This is quite a thread and I have not read all of it, so I may be repeating a suggestion provided earlier.
A number of years ago I dropped a lump of cast iron on my left great toe, resulting in a longitudinal Crack. It repaired, not a problem.......... for a while.
If I do a lot of walking, or activity that places pressure on the toes (climbing ladders), then I'm very soon in trouble with pain in that big toe.
I have found that pain killers / anti-inflammatories, are "horses for courses".
Of all those meds I have and have had (so far), the only thing that has given me relief (and I mean total & quick relief) has been Diclofenac NA 75 mg EC tabs.
As soon as my toe kicks off, I hit it with 2 tabs and maybe 1, 12 hours later.
Trouble is, it's a prescription med and if you already get other anti-inflammatories they won't give you a script for Diclofenac.
If you are lucky, maybe the OTC diclofenac Sodium topical gel from your local pharmacy might work but I would put my bet on the tabs not the gel.
An aside: I take Celexoxib for RA and Tylenol 3, for other stuff and neither of them sort the toe out.
