Do You Get the Impression You Are Not Believed by Others…

Posted by SusanEllen66 @SusanEllen66, Apr 16 12:09am

When you tell your “story” do you feel like others think you are lying?
For example, you go to a new doctor, give them your long list of medical situations and you get the feeling you are not believed.

Or you tell someone a true, but unusual experience you have had. You get that side glance, squinting eyes look…you can tell they doubt your story.

It happens to me, what about you?

I have had long COVID for 3 years now. When I tell people why they have not seen me much due to being sick, I can see, some of them, do not believe me. In the beginning, when I got sick, even one of the doctors did not believe me and in fact, she rolled her eyes when I told her I thought it was Long COVID. I confronted her and acknowledged that I had in fact seen her roll her eyes. I am not saying to confront people. I have to know my own truth and do what I can to research and maybe help someone else in the same situation or dealing with something similar. No one really knows what someone else is thinking. Intuition, I believe to be a great sensor. I have not followed mine, many times when I needed to, however I usually learn something from that situation. I am so glad I found this page. I am on other pages here and due to feeling sh*tty a lot, I do not go out much anymore. Going to go back and read some other posts. Thanks to all for being a part of this.

I have had multiple doctors do that to me. If you are older and especially female, you do not always get taken seriously or fully listened to. To me, it isn’t only about being taken seriously or believed, it can be doctor bias, arrogance, ignorance, or disrespect. They just may not care. They stop listening.

There are many doctors who should retire or change careers.

Older patients and females must work extra hard to advocate for themselves and keep pushing for proper diagnosis and treatment options to improve quality of life. You need to do research and educate yourself plus review all of your medical records to have knowledgeable conversations with doctors and to ask questions. If doctors dismiss you, you must fire them and keep looking for doctors who still care to help their patients feel better and improve their quality of life.

I totally agree with you about this! I think many doctors and sadly, people and family members, gaslight us. I have felt this happening to me a lot of times with doctors and even in my family. I can’t put my finger on why they do that, but it’s not fun to be around and yes, I’m always looking for excellent doctors who also listen and care. It can be tricky to find those good qualities, but I think at Mayo they are almost all super excellent and caring!! 😃😎😃

I think that it’s very hurtful when you share an experience that was traumatic with your family and then you realize that they doubt your words. I can’t even express how much it hurts me but I can’t do anything about it. I don’t think I can do much about it, I know it’s the truth and maybe one day the truth will prevail but in the meantime I’m withdrawing from this situation because I can’t do much about it.

Dear @SusanEllen66 and everyone else,

Having a doctor or doctors help or not until you need it. I’ve been there. I enjoy all the doctors that I have. A few years ago, I hit my rear-ends inmygarage.

xxx Family-Doctor & TBI Doctor xxx
That hit my pain & I could not cuts our yards. I’ve need to my family-doctor, that I had the last 30 years-ago. And that family-doctor “helped” the wrong way. Thankfully, my family-doctor helped my needs after that last years. He sent me to the other-doctor, who helped the my neck & top of my head-brain(from my TBI membership accident 12 years ago) showed me of what he could do and get rid of pain - my body from my rear-ends to the bottom of of my feet. I was at the local hospital, that took 5 days after, got rid of my body pain. It was gone, but it took me 6 mths after to get my body back. I’m now1 year ago and it’s wow ❤️

I wish the best for all of you,
Greg D. @greg1956

What a Great topic ! With so many electronics , greedy businesses doctors don’t have time to set down and look thru our charts like they used to! We’re now a number not a patient . Having a failed back surgery and seeing 7 doctors since and NO ONE willing to do anything except a stimulator which I had turned on 2 weeks ago and still can’t feel it where I need it because of my spine incision is swelled and numb. I’m losing faith in the Neurosurgeons I can no longer walk without 2 canes, Walker or use a scooter . I had to set and wait 35 minutes at Walmart today to get a scooter . I can’t sleep in bed, None of them will let me explain how it has affected my bowels if I bend over I have to go, all they say is you don’t have that we looked at your MRI from a year ago. So now they’re sending me to a proctologist . I was a pipefitter for 30 years now @ 53 years old I’m totally disabled I don’t want an inexperienced surgeon trying to fix me just a surgeon that will listen more than 3 minutes and be willing to send me to the right person I rub my tailbone and the pain goes to my testicles the original surgeon with me in the wheelchair says no you don’t have that go see a urologist , my urologist laughed and said it’s my back . I’m Open to suggestions on how to sweet talk a surgeon so they will listen to me since I’m the one in the body. I’m on so much meds my kidneys are on the border between stage 2 & 3.
