Possible 2 different cancers in lungs?

Posted by guyjeff123 @guyjeff123, May 2 8:29am

On 5/1/25 I had an ION CT Scan and then a Pet Scan of my lungs. On the CT Scan it showed a 6mm node that was a 5mm node 1 month ago and it also showed the 1 cm node that was new 1 month ago and unchanged now. The PET Scan showed two and possibly 3 areas that lit up. The first area was the 1cm node in my right upper lobe and the 2nd was a new 5mm node in my left upper lobe. There was one other area that my doctor showed me that looked like a cloud and in the center there was something that lit up dimly. My question is about something my Pulmonologist said. he said " We are going to do a robotic CT guided biopsy of the node in my right lobe and the one in my left lobe. He said he hoped they were the same cancer and they caught it early. The best case scenario is that both nodes are the same type of cancer, but they developed separately in each lobe and if they are different cancers, that would be Bad." I asked him to elaborate on "Bad," but he didn't. Is it common to have two different types of cancers in your lungs? Also, what makes that a worse case scenario? Thank you for any responses to my query.

I had a nodule that was deemed suspicious and three years later it was cancer, I also had a new nodule right beside the malignant one and it was also cancer but not the same as the other one. This was dealt with by performing a lobectomy removing both, I didn’t know this until after the surgery, I never heard anything else about having two different cancers but it sure made me feel uncomfortable, I would think that if this was more serious, they would have told me.

I would like to add, I’m sorry for your problems and that you have a lot to deal with. I’m not sure why the doctor is making more out of this, my research is brief but it seems that this situation is better than one cancer spreading and also, having two cancers it’s easier to treat. Of course there’s a lot more info out there so just ask, good wishes.

It is possible to have more than one type of cancer in the lungs. It's possible to have two different cancers within the same lobe and even within the same mass or nodule, adenosquamous being the one I hear about most. It's rare but it does happen.

14.5+ years ago I was diagnosed with mucinous adenocarcinoma. This year I have been diagnosed with a new and completely different lung cancer, adenocarcinoma with a KRAS G12 F mutation.

I had a biopsy showing adenocarcinoma but after removing my lung after closer examination they also found sarcomatoid carcinoma, a much worse cancer. So far it seems like they were able to capture all the cancers but they had to take out my left lung to get them. I’m doing much better than i thought i would including playing golf and walking 6 miles yesterday

It could be that they are not cancer, even if they light up..it could be an infection or inflammation.. that is what I had.. they thought it was systemic cancer, they were around the same size nodule..

An experience by my hubby in 2020 learning of each lung having a different cancer. Thoracic Surgeon removed one lobe from left lung and cleaned out +/- 11 lymph nodes as precaution in the area. Right lung had radiation. Not sure why removal was not done but hubby's age probably was a factor and perhaps the different type of cancer made that decision? 2021 he was put on a 3 year study with Tagrisso as his left lung marking was compatible with the type, and has now been off that for 6 months. Radiation went well, Tagrisso with a few minor side effects but basically was fine, and now he still continues to get a 4-6 month enhanced CT scan. Stable has been the remarks but last year a .6mm node showed lower right lung exterior. June this year is his next enchanced CT scan and we are hoping that it has not increased in size, or, a blessing not to show at all!! No biopsies, PET scans, etc. have been done at this point. As we say "one day at a time", enjoy everyday, and try and stay as upbeat and positive as we can. He was a healthy fit man before this unexpected surprise was shared with us - no symptoms to say lung even entered a health problem. June 27 this year he will be 83 years and he is playing pickleball. Finds he has to pace himself, but think we all do as the years creep up on us. All the Best to You moving forward, there is still alot of goodness left in you.

Pathology on my lobectomy in 2018 showed that the 2 larger tumours were different, one was neuroendocrine (dipnech) and one adenocarcinoma.
Last year I had another lobectomy on an adjoining lobe and path results showed another adenocarcinoma but this one had egfr and kras mutations that apparently is rare to have together.
So yes it is possible to have two different cancers in same lung lobe.

@guyjeff123, Right now, it's all speculation. Which can be so hard to deal with. Our minds run wild.
Based on the responses here, yes, people can develop more than one type of lung cancer. But that doesn't mean that yours will be two types. I have lung cancer in one lung, and a fungal nodule in the other. You've been through a lot recently. Knowing what these nodules are will help to settle your mind. Knowing lets us get a plan in place, and I'm always better with a plan. 🙂
The levels that the PET light up (referred to as uptake) can be telling in some circumstances too.
Has the biopsy been scheduled?

They want to take out my upper right lobe because it's in a spot they say they can't get to to take a biopsy..they don't know it's it cancer..any advice.. I'm very healthy 64 and no other symptoms

Have they done a PET Scan on The Lungs ? If you are not aware of this, a PET scan is a 2 hour process where they inject a contrast in you, then give it 1 hour to get through your body. They then scan your body and if a node is cancer it lights up the area. It's not 100% accurate, but it is usually right. I would also ask if you know how big the node is and have they been monitoring it for growth?
