Does anyone have experience with a Reverse shoulder replacement?

Posted by djfrostj @djfrostj, 5 days ago

I am scheduled for a reverse shoulder replacement in September because the rotator cuff repair (3.3 cm) did not work. The idea of reversing parts is a little unnerving.

I had one on January 13 and the pain is so much less than before surgery I highly recommend it. I still have some pain and i have a real problem when I try and straighten out my arm. It has a name but I can’t remember it. My therapist said it’s the movement your rotator cuff normally does (mine was completely gone) so I now have to use my deltoid and tricep muscles and mine are very weak. They said some people never get that motion back which is depressing but I’d still take that over the pain I had before surgery! I’m having my dominant one done this fall and I’m not looking forward to that at all! I can’t do anything with my other hand!

I had a reverse replacement in July 2024. I had been in severe chronic pain for five years. Best decision ever. I am almost pain free, but not totally. I do not have full range of motion but it is significantly better. So I can't say it was 100% a success, but in my opinion was definitely worth it. Had it done at Mayo Rochester.

I had a reverse shoulder replacement at Mayo Rochester in July 2023 by Dr Sotelo-Sanchez. Before surgery, my shoulder was a mess. I had almost no function and lots of discomfort/pain for about 10 years plus. I had no pain with the surgery or after the surgery - this was very surprising because my pcp said everyone has terrible pain after surgery. I have no pain at all now and have full function. I do not “push it” - do not carry heavy objects, do pushups, etc., but I don’t do that with my native right arm either.

I had a total reverse right shoulder replacement last Thursday (5/1) at Kaiser Vallejo CA - Dr. Hazrati. In at 7:30am and out at 1:30pm. Nerve block lasted ~ 24 hours. Minimal pain however. I take a couple ibuprofen before bed. Doing the recommended exercises and start PT next week. So far so good.

For those responding that have had favorable results from a Reverse Shoulder Replacement, are you restricted in the amount of weight you are able to lift? My husband had rotator cuff repair on a large & medium tear back in November which has not gone well. He went back to the surgeon after PT told him they didn't want him back until he saw the surgeon again. He ended up going in for an MRI w/contrast that showed two more smaller tears & osteoarthritis, but the doctor has pushed him to continue PT. The therapist has asked my husband twice now about getting a 2nd opinion. When we saw the surgeon, we questioned him about a reverse should replacement after doing some research and he said that may be an option, but my husband would never be able to lift anything heavier than 5 lbs for the rest of his life! At 66 years of age, that is not feasible for him. Has anyone experience permanent weight restriction or activities?

My request for hospital and surgeon's name was to "belgagrande". I am of a similar age and have been told I need a reverse shoulder replacement. He/she seemed to have a very good outcome. I would like to find a surgeon near me who is experienced with this type of surgery.

Per your request: Brian Grawe M.D.
University of Cincinnati Medical Center,West Chester Ohio.
Surgery was done as a same day surgery, I arrived at the hospital at 6:30 AM and I was sent home at 3:PM.

I had unusual circumstances related to the reverse shoulder replacement on my left shoulder. When I was 13 years old I was involved in an accident that resulted in losing most of my right hand. Since then I was forced to learn how to do everything with my left hand such as writing, opening a bottle etc. ,my left arm was doing double duty.
Since my left shoulder was now important in performing daily tasks, it was imperative to get it back into action. I made the exercises that PT gave me priority in gaining back a normal life. I spent an hour at PT learning new exercises which I would go hone and spend 4 hours performing everyday.
DO YOUR EXERCISES no matter how difficult, they will eventually give you success in your recovery.

My doctor indicated 30 lbs lifetime maximum. My friend who had one last December said his doctor limited him to 20 lbs.
