Shooting pain in toes and bottoms of feel is worse at night

Posted by sandyhaynes @sandyhaynes, 2 days ago

I am prediabetic and have leg muscle pains plus sciatica. The pain is unbearable on the bottoms of my feet (balls of my feet) when I am in bed. My feel numb sometimes during the day. Is there anything besides compression socks that I can do ?

There are pain relieving foot creams you may want to try. I'm sorry you are suffering so. Hugs, CB

Diddo… neuropathy pain has been part of my life for 25 years. It began with “bee sting” issues in my toes and has progressed through the years. I think I have tried every suggestion offered for pain relief with disappointment. I believe money can not buy neuropathy permanent pain relief! However, topical creams, foams menthol and many others do relieve some pain and allows a relief long enough to fall asleep or complete functional necessities.
That’s my 2cents. Let me know if any permanent solution is found. 🙂

Yes, nighttime is the worst for neuropathy especially feet. The pains are intense (!) and come and go. I get pain in more and more locations as time goes on. Best to you.

Hello Sandy,
Since neuropathy is essentially a nerve condition, I feel it is tougher at night since while sleeping we can put extra pressure on nerves whithout us knowing which ones. This more than likely causes the stabbing that shoots down to wherever that never ends in the foot and unless we turn to releive that nerve, the stabbing remains. However, when we do turn to a different side, we can do the exact same thing on the other side for lack of knowing the pathway nerves follow in our bodies. It's a web of pathways that's highly intricate and interconnected like our entire anatomy and physiology.
I am not sure if neuropathy socks will help. Just make sure the compression socks are not just for diabetes but for both diabetes and neuropathy. They are not the same. You can also maybe try, like someone else suggested, over the counter capsiacin cream. I don't know how much it will help, but hopefully it should not hurt you more either.
Best wishes and take care,
gus

Hello Sandy, so sorry your having these issues too. Both of my feet have numbness in the balls and all toes and the pain spikes when trying to sleep are the worst! Nothing like waking from a dead sleep from a bolt of lightening shooting out my big toes. I take tylenol 3 with codeine when they get this bad. I've tried a variety of shoes, socks and slippers to no avail. I also have arthritis in my hands, back and feet. The hand specialist at Mayo recommended compression gloves and they help for that but had no effect from the socks for my feet.
It's crazy how our feet can be numb yet painful at the same time.
Hope for healing and comfort,
Brian

My thoughts exactly! How can your feet be numb yet hurt and Burns like hundreds of hot needles are being poked into your feet. Bedtime is the worse, laying there unable to ignore the pain. I use lidocaine creame put lidocaine patches on the bottom of my feet when the pain is really bad. I wish there were other ways to deal with this pain. I take Tylenol and ibuprofen day and night.

I asked the same question, why are my feet so numb, yet the nerve pain is unbearable.
I recently broke my left ankle, the bone came thru and yet I felt no pain.
I even felt no post operative pain either.
They all looked at me as if I was crazy.
Someone said my neuropathy was a blessing in desguise in that respect.
I take Tramadol 50 mg at bedtime, along with Tylenol.
That helps me sleep or else I’d be going crazy with my nerve pain.

I was on gabapentin taking the max dose and still had pain everyday. My doctor here at Mayo changed it out and now on Lyrica and desipramine. It helps enough to tolerate the spikes most the time but I still get a couple spikes a week that can be quite strong. I agree at bedtime is the worst. The best way I can describe it to people is, when I was a mechanic for almost 30 years the closest feeling to the neuropathy pain spikes is like getting shocked by an ignition coil or a spark plug wire.

Thanks for that information. I was on gabapentin for several years, until I started having trouble falling asleep while driving.
